YESTERDAY, Molde had reportedly accepted a£4m bid by Liverpool Football Club for central defender Vegard Forren; however after the player touched down in England, the proposed move is off, with Forren seemingly now headed for Southampton.

Rather than bidding, as widely reported, Liverpool had only offered a trial to the Norwegian, with Brendan Rodgers preparing to assess the defender at Melwood today.

However, Molde have now accepted a concrete offer from Southampton and Forren has made a u-turn, instead heading South for talks with the Saints this afternoon.

Norwegian television channel, TV2, originally broke the Liverpool story in Scandinavia early yesterday, where it was then picked up by ESPN and the Daily Mirror in the UK.

Forren was a stand-out player for Molde as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side lifted the Tippeligaen (Norwegian title) last season, as well as making his debut for the Norwegian national side.

His progress hasn’t gone unnoticed on this side of the North Sea with several Premier League clubs said to have been running their eyes over the defender. TV 2 had even announced that Liverpool had acted swiftest of all to secure his signature, having had an offer accepted.

According to TV2 yesterday:

“Molde has accepted a bid from Premier League club Liverpool. The 24-year old is travelling to England on Tuesday to undertake a medical.”

The Daily Mirror however, claimed that the deal was on a trial basis and that Forren will train with the first team at Melwood on Tuesday; something which has now proven true, and since confirmed by Molde manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer:

“We have had a good dialogue with Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who wanted to speak with Vegard and see him in training.

“We agreed that he could go there to see the conditions. But Liverpool have not made a bid.”

Forren has been likened in Scandinavia to Liverpool’s very own Daniel Agger because he’s good on the ball, strong and left-footed. It remains to be seen just how the Norwegian will settle in the Premier League, but if any comparisons with Agger prove true, then Liverpool fans could bemoan ‘the one that got away’.
