Rodgers: Damned if you do, Damned if you don’t

Brendan Rodgers suffers defeat“For a player to be good enough to play for Liverpool, he must be prepared to run through a brick wall for me then come out fighting on the other side.”

Those famous words of Bill Shankly had some significance yesterday. Those words that should be engrained in the hearts of all those academy, reserve and first team players before they’re allowed to wear that famous red shirt.

I’m not one to hark back to the glory days, but I think history and ethos should be your lens for how you go forward in the future. Yesterday, those young players who no doubt have all the ability in the world and a long prosperous career ahead of them showed the elements missing from their game; football intelligence, aggression, desire and most of all character.

That was not the case for Oldham, they came out fighting showing the belief and desire that they could get a result. Rodgers clearly had thought the team was good enough to win, but the team showed an arrogance which belittled their opponents ambition and heart.

Indeed Rodgers was praised for his selection by most of the pundits prior to kick-off, the reality of two massive league games in the space of 7 days the reason for not fielding his best XI – a decent XI all the same – just not an XI good enough for a street-fight.

There was only one fighter in the end – the man that inspired that famous come back in Istanbul. Even the magic of Luis Suarez crafting a magical goal, with help from a superb run by Borini to draw out the centre-back and provide the space for Suarez to run inside, was not enough to stop the rot.

I have to say the captain’s armband suits Suarez. I thought he managed the players well and lead by example, but in the end it came to Steven Gerrard to lift the team and try and produce something special. Nearly, so nearly, yet all too late in the end. That is the story of our season so far; too little, too late.

No doubt, many of you reading this will call for Rodgers to be axed; that is your opinion and you’re entitled to it but it’s not a view I share. Yesterday, Rodgers was damned if he did, and damned if he didn’t. Start a full first XI and you put your league position at serious jeopardy. Or start a team which by all means is capable of winning and they let you down.

Sebastian Coates came out looking like a homeless wanderer rather than an established defender who’s won the Copa America, confidence gone and completely mentally ruined. Jack Robinson telling Saurez to, well you all saw it – you can’t speak to someone who’s carried the team like that.

Rodgers came into a side in turmoil, Maxi and Kuyt looking to leave and Bellamy looking to go home having shown he was still capable of producing magic for Liverpool. A boardroom not quite operating at an effective level, a task to change the way the team play and the biggest job of his life on the line from day one. He’s resurrected the career of Henderson and Downing, improved Reina and brought in some fresh young blood. He’s made mistakes as any man would do, but has understood the call of the fans that the league’s important but so are trophies, and he’s had to rely on the reserves at times to still be in the position he is.

That’s not a bad haul. He’s also statistically performing above Rafa, Hodgson and Dalglish since 09/10 in terms of win/loss ratio and goals scored. Credit has to be given when doing better than the current England Manager, a Champions League winner and the legend that is the King. The next two games will tell us a lot about this Liverpool side and the collective desire.

Yesterday’s test in character and desire was a fail without question. The challenge will be to put it all behind them (again) and to remember that there will be many more brick walls to run through – the question is can they do that? If not then they should go and in my view, good riddance!

I was prepared to give Rodgers the benefit of the doubt, but for him to pick a team that was going to be bullied by a gang of thugs and then to blame it on those kids, takes the biscuit. I’m afraid to say he’s another one who doesn’t like cup competitions. Bring back Kenny.

    • Tim Williams says:

And bringing back Kenny would make sense why? Personally speaking I didnt think Kenny deserved to be sacked, to build a team you need time. Time to get your squad together and instill your philosophy and that doesnt happen in 18 months. The game has changed a lot in recent years but the need for patience remains.

If Kenny came back now, or any new manager, he would have to have time to assess the squad and which players he fancies as fitting his system. Kenny and Brendan play very different systems (not saying either is correct or wrong) and therefore require different players. You are back to square one. again.

Rodgers is our manager now and he will need time and patience and there will be bumps in the road along the way of course. Its not like any of our great managers got upset in the cup is it…..

Rollocking the youngsters? correct. He is treating the youth as part of his squad and allowing them the platform to prove themselves, and some failed yesterday. Was his team selection right? in hindsight no but if you are to be part of the squad you have to accept praise and rocllockings in equal measure as and when deserved.

      • Chan says:

Tim, thetre are not many occasions i can agree and disagree with you at the same time but this is the occasion.

Yes, bringing back KD would not help, we tried it not too long ago and he went and blew 85 mill only for BR to inherit this mess.

BR is our manager now only because FSG went and make another blunder after KD, it does not mean we have to accepts their path of doom. We still have time to change our destiny for the better.

An article appeared at this site not too long ago saying what a wonderfull man manager BR is. Yes i can hear many laughing now. Coates is a cultured defender who is South American Champ. Under BR all that change. Instead BR turns his attention onto his garbage likes Allen and Borini. Only BR can turn Champs into Chumps in a heart beat.

Another thing, BR is a coward. If we had wobn that game, he would have taken all the credit, fielding younsters and all that. Now that we have loss, all the blame is on the players, none on himself. Sorry, but as manager the buck stops with him, he manages the team and its his job to prepare the team the beat one that is 2 division down.

    • bill says:

are you for real rodgers is sorting out kennys mistakes, do you think he really wants downing carroll coates etc but cant just offload like chelsea or city we dont have bottomless pit of cash. if we just keep changing managers nothing will change

      • Tim Williams says:

I was confused for a second haha you are a different bill!!

you are right though, how many clubs are successful with a high managerial turnover? (dont say chelsea, they are an anomaly). Why are United so successful? club stability and patience is a main reason. Our most successful years? stability.

        • Chan says:

Tim, we have heard this countless times since the days of Souness.

What most forget is that AF won the Scottish title with Aberdeen and at the same time broke the Old Firm strangle hold. The same can be said of Rafa when he won La Liga with Valencia, on a much smaller budget compared with Real or Barca.

Now, what exactly was BR’s achievement? That 180 page dossier does not count.

      • Dennis says:

if we have a sh!t manager ( which we do) then nothing will change if we DONT sack him

        • Tim Williams says:

Go on then Dennis, why do you think he is sh!t?

how long would you give the next manager??

    • Mario says:

Yes , KD had better management . 1 cup , plus 1 runnerup . Nothing except failure with Rogers

      • Tim Williams says:

ok, so in his second stint kenny had 18 months (not enough for me but thats a different argument), and had 2 finals and 1 cup, but you are slagging off Rodgers as a failue after 6 months??

surely if you are going to compare then Rodgers has to have 18 months no? (too short still) but hey thats me being sensible!

        • Chan says:

Oh both of you stop it. BOTH of them are *. In RAFA we trust. Just remember Istanbul and Prem 08/09.

    • pat says:

you are right bill , blame rodgers as he is totally useless .id have king kenny any day

    • Jimmy Areabi (Editor) says:

For me, the blame has to lies somewhere between the two – but Rodgers should shoulder more of the responsibility.
On one hand, a manager can’t legislate for awful mistakes (Brad Jones) and poor play, lacking in real fight/being bullied/general sloppiness (Coates, Robinson, Borini), and yes, the team (players) selected *should* have had more than enough about them to win the game.
HOWEVER, Rodgers is more culpable and here’s why:
      – his selection resembled that of someone playing a computer game. Just because we now have more than one forward to select shouldn’t mean we select them all at once – Suarez, Sturridge, Borini AND Sterling, leaving just Allen and Hendo in mid to cope with a battle? The shape suffered as a consequence and the mid (with an out-of-form Allen) was never present until the introduction of Gerrard. Sturridge, Borini and Sterling had poor games with Suarez becoming increasingly isolated with no service from mid.
      – Then there’s the defensive selection. What baffles me on Rodgers’ part is…how can he state last week (v Norwich AT Anfield) that the team lack dominant voices/are quiet, hence the inclusion of Carra, THEN a week later when playing in an away game that will be a complete battle against lower league oppo, leave the most vocal and best defensive organiser, who has all the attributes for a dogfight, out? Surely one week hasn’t made other team members find their voices? And saying that, this week’s team included players who need more guidance on the pitch, not less (without the likes of Gerrard, Lucas, Agger and Johnson).
Rodgers was responsible for the team selection and shape. It is increasingly worrying how we are getting bullied at the back, as well as in midfield. We lack a dominant ball-winning aggressor (Lucas ain’t aggressive) in the mould of Momo or Mascherano

  • Kay says:

Quick correction Mr Ritchie, Rafa spearheaded the comeback in Turkey. Kaka, Serdof and Pirlo were running rings around Stevie and Xabi before Rafa made the half time change to bring in Hamaan…

    • Tim Williams says:

That same season before Istanbul Rafa lost away at Burnley! good job he wasnt sacked eh!

      • TaintlessRed says:

        Very true.

Souness, Evans, Houllier, Rafa & Hodgson all lost to teams we should’ve beaten comfortably. Houllier & Rafa in particular lost by pickibg much weaker 2nd string teams than Rodgers did versus Oldham, but later began to pick mixtures of 1st team regulars and fringe players.

The side Rodgers picked should’ve been able to compete. He gave some players an opportunity but the truth is they let him, and us fans down. I for one didn’t think Coates, all 6 foot 5 of him, would have been bullied so easily. Allen is just getting worse, his goal (by aid of a huge deflection) doesn’t change his ineffective performance. Borini may be an athlete but he is sorely lacking in confidence, I hope his technical deficiencies can improve with training.

I’ve been critical of Rodgers for some of his team selections, tactics or comments to the media this season but the side he picked was completely understandable.

Reina was injured. Enrique wasn’t fully fit and Robinson deserved an opportunity. Coates won young player of the year at the Copa America 2 years ago. Skrtle’s a seasoned international and Wisdoms been playing regularly (plus Kelly & Flanagan are injured). Hendersons been playing well and should embrace playing in his favoured position. Allen has rightly been dropped from the 1st team, and is supposedly a £15m player. Borini similarly should have loved this level of opposition. Then Sterling whose been rested in the 1st team recently and our 1st choice front two.
        That team should win.
The blame for the result must go on the players.
The blame for Rodgers is that two of the 3 worst players on the night were bought by Rodgers for £26m.

        • Dennis says:

Im sorry No . If Rodgers selects the light weight Allen in midfield , when he knows its going to be a physical battle – then its the manager to blame

He saw how Mansfield made a monkey out of Allen and he picked him again

In most cases – if you win the midfield you win the game . We had NO chance of winning the midfield with Allen there

        • Dennis says:

          Also selecting Borini was ridiculous

        • Tim Williams says:

Dennis do you honestly believe we lost that game purely in midfield and purely because of Allen? behave yourself, to alienate one player as you have shows that you are using him as a scapegoat, I actually thought Allen, along with Henderson, was one of the better players. The game was lost in the back four and the front four. The back four failed to cut out delivery in the box and deal with the physical presence of Smith whereas the front 4 continually ost possession with either poor passing or poor decision making. This meant that we could not build up any sustained pressure.

But hey why assess a teams performance when you can single out an individual! do you still boo lucas?

        • Tim Williams says:

Taintlessred I disagree to an extent with you. I think it is wrong to higlight individuals in a negative light in this way, we lose as a team we win as a team. The whole team pre-gerrard didnt perform, but personally I thought allen and henderson were best of a bad bunch, they got stuck in and the game was most certainly not lost in that area.

in hindsight, wonderful tool, rodgers got it wrong and we should have seen carra or gerrard start, but hey, congrats Oldham they played out of their skin. Unsuprisingly in modern football this has been blown out of all proportion

        • TaintlessRed says:

Tim, I agree that Henderson did okay (though hardly great) and his endeavour at right back was positive, and that our defending was clearly shocking but the midfield was the root cause for me. For one hour we did not control the game. The pressure we came under was as a result of Oldham having too much of the ball. Suarez played well and Sturridge made good runs and though he lost the ball at times this was under pressure or trying to beat a player. I saw him make a number of runs into space only for dithering in midfield and the pass not being made.
I don’t want to be blame this result on Joe, clearly there were a lot of poor performances. However, Allen was unable to impose himself on the game, help win second balls, or direct play. If he wants to break into the 1st team he has to do a lot better than this. He was a shrinking violet for 60 minutes and he didn’t show for the ball as well as Henderson did. Gerrard came on and showed how a midfielder controls a game. Against a team from league 1 we should have dominated possession but we didn’t.
Certainly other players were poor but Allen is 23, Robinson, Wisdom are only 19 and we should rightly expect more from Joe. Borini was equally a dissapointment, he’s clearly getting up to speed on fitness but his lack of confidence was highlighted by his fluffed chance early in the 2nd half.
I don’t think all of the team were equally bad before Gerrard, but certainly too many of them were.

        • Tim Williams says:

TaintlessRed, whilst we dont always see eye to eye (and football would be boring if we did) at least you engage in discussion, exactly what this site is about!

the beauty of the game is that people can have different opinions without being right or wrong. Personally i think our midfield was overloaded because of a lack of pressing from our front players and a lack of ball retention high up the pitch. not seen us pass that bad befoe to be honest. But all 3 goals for them were easily prventable an the blame there lies in the back four.

      • Chan says:

Tim, Rafa was a winner with Valencia, same as AF when he went to United. That was why be could be more tolerant with him, knowing he got what it takes to take us to the next level (which he did, all the while having to fend of those cowboys)but with some bumps along the way.

BR have ZERO record, won nothing at any level and LFC is not about to become a training ground for managers wannabe. With BR we have that unmistakable feeling it would be a path of doom, seeing how he handle the team and tactics.

        • Tim Williams says:

Chan I never wanted Rafa to go in the first place!

Some mistake me for a BR apologist when that is far from the case. I try to take a view of the bigger picture, and sacking a manager after 6 months let alone the shift in the playing staff is ludicrous whoever it is. Whether Rodgers should have got the job is a different debate, but the fact is that he got it and is in place. I for one can see signs of what we are trying to achieve and this will take time, changing the manager now would be pointless as we would have to start again….again.

  • red says:

We are heading into right direction. We are improving. Sturridge is “Super Dan”. Borini is the future. B. Jones ready to take over Reina place. We have the resource to compete with everyone. Allen is Welsh Xabi.

All familiar B.S. and now “Damned if you do, Damned if you don’t”.

Sack BR now unless you still believing that we can win europa cup or top 4 finishing.

p/s: I have the feeling that even BR will struggle in championship !!!

    • Tim Williams says:

So what good would sacking Rodgers do? Taking over from Kenny he is trying to impose a completely different style of play which takes time. You sack him now and bring in a new manager who will need time to install his new style of play which will be a similarly bumpy road, sack him in 6 months?

as for your player points, nice to see you have judged allen and borini so soon, i bet you booed lucas! of course jones was brought in to replace reina, obviously and is in no way just a back up keeper, and 3 goals in 4 games isnt enough from Sturridge to provide promise! sheeesh

      • Dennis says:

Is this your column Tim ? No So Feck off . I dont read or comment on your idiotic columns cos i dont want to interact with a complete moron

        • Tim Williams says:

so you can only comment on cloumns you have written?? so why are you commmenting?

Serious question for you Dennis, why dont you like your point of view challenged?

(i am wounded you dont read my pieces, but honoured that you recognise my points from my pieces!)

      • Chan says:

Tim, sacking BR would not have tremendous short term benefit but it would set us the right path for the future, provided no more cock ups from FSG and they get the right man.

Somehow, i do not thing any top managers can screw up more than BR.

    • Dennis says:

      You are correct Red

  • Tim Williams says:

The reaction of some it is like no team has ever lost to a lower division side before. Burnley, Reading, Grimsby, Northampton anyone?

I think that some people are so desperate to knock Rodgers they will use any stick that they can. is he perfect? far from it! did he make mistakes yesterday? i think so, but that side should be beating Oldham 9 times out of 10. But as is the way with the cup Oldham played out of their skins for a big scalp and our lot were not as up for it as they should have been. None of our game came together from our passing to our tempo to our pressing.

As a supporter it is right that we question decisions constructively but constantly calling for a manager to be sacked, singling out individuals, really? is that the Liverpool Way? I dont think so.

We lost, we are all disappointed, learn from what went wrong, learn how to address and move on.

    • Chan says:

Tim, the last i checked BR was busy deflecting ALL the blame to his players.

      Isn’t that singling out too?

Hey, is that the new Liverpoool way?

  • Dennis says:

I see the Rodgers apologisers are out in force already . Rodgers is a joke of a manager , his continual selection of the lightweight Allen proves it . The man deserved the sack months ago

    • Tim Williams says:

Rodgers apologisers? seriously Dennis? and sacked months ago????????? yeah because that is exactly what the club needs isnt it, to sack a manager after 2-3 months.

    • pat says:

correct dennis , he should never have got the job , but as he did , i think after 3 months we could see he didnt have a clue . i mean just look who he signed … allen borini, assadi n sahin – disgraceful

no defo 3 months well enough

    • Chan says:

Dennis correction, he should never be here in the first place.

You are right though, those BR apologist is out in force. Anything to preserve BR the individual but not LFC the club.

      • Jimmy Areabi (Editor) says:

Chan, talking of who is out in force…nice to see you back on here just two days after a defeat…took you a whole week to ‘appear’ after the team won 5-0.

        • Chan says:

Jimmy, unlike a small minority, beating a team in freefall 5-0 does not mean progress, we lost to another team in freefall Villa too, know what i mean? I do not get overly exited because of 1 match. Have we beaten any team above us?

Look at the Oldham match, we lost to a team 2 Divisions down and who are in danger of relegation. Progress anyone?

  • Jack says:

would we have won with our best players yesterday ? … i think nearly 99% definitely . So whose fault that we took Oldham lightly ? The manager of course
2 cup competitions we are out of cos off Rodgers picking cr@p teams , we also know he will do same in Europa with same result

Liverpool FC is about winning trophies , and Rodgers is mucking up our chances of doing that

    • Tim Williams says:

      a crap team?? please embellish….

it took shanks 4 years to get out of Division 2. Fergie 4 years to win anything at United and yet you are slagging Rodgers off after 6 months??

Rafa in his first year went out in the first round to Burnley, should he have gone?

      • Dennis says:

Feck off you idiot Tim , stop trolling everyone’s comments

        • Tim Williams says:

Dennis, please tell me how that is trolling? or are you trying to avoid having to get in a conversation about LFC as you cant back up any of your points?

      • finn says:

Your such an idiot Tim , i think everyone is realising it now.

And you dont even know your Liverpool facts – shankley got promoted in his 2nd full season , after finishing 3rd in his 1st full season

Your not just a troll , you are an uneducated troll

      • Chan says:

Tim, when Shanks took over, we were in Div 2, so nothing much to complain.

Like i said earlier, Rafa and AF were winners before they went to LFC and United.

        What have BR got?

    • pat says:

rodgers must take blame for both cup exits . its dis graceful playing allen in a physical match

  • Mario says:

Rogers is out of his depth , but fools keep making excuse s

They are same excuses used 3 months ago .Any real Liverpool fan would not want their club managed by bad manager like Rogers

    • Tim Williams says:

Tell you wat Mario, I challenge you to contribute to the debate…

      1. what are these excuses being made for Rodgers?

      2. why do you think he is out of his depth?

      • Dennis says:

People dont want to chat with you Tim – everyone on here knows your a total fool

        • Tim Williams says:

hahaha oh they do, do they or perhaps they have no counter argument? 😉

        • Steve says:

No you are a fool judging by your comments

        • Tim Williams says:

Steve, go on then why are my comments foolish?

        • Chan says:

Not Dennis, Tim is not exactly a fool, just a BR fan who is probably employed by his PR team.

        • Jimmy Areabi (Editor) says:

So that makes you employed by Rafa, Chan?

Tim writes for the site. He is encouraged to comment on the site with his views and thoughts.

Everyone else has the right to comment in a constructive, non-abusive manner. That;s the beauty of debate – we can all have differing opinions, but should be able to convey them appropriately.

Also, as I’ve stated many times in the past, if you think you can construct better opinion-piece articles, please submit them for review.

  • Tim Williams says:

    Just to highlight my points:

Currently after 23 league games we have won 9 drawn 7 lost 7 which is 34 points scoring 40 goals.

This point last season we had won 10 drawn 8 and lost 5 thats 38 points scoring 28 goals.

ok we are out of both cup competitions but prior to last year when were we last in a final?

so in terms of league we are 4 points worse off. This is after losing maxi, kuyt and bellers 3 key experienced players, losing carroll and having 1 fit striker fo m ost of it, introducing on a regular basis 3 academy players as well as bringin in other young players. what were people expecting in all seriousness?

    • James D says:

      You talk pure crap

    • Chan says:

Oh i see, who exactly went out of his way to get rid of Kuyt and Maxi?

      Answer : BR

      • Jimmy Areabi (Editor) says:

        Wrong.

Kuyt had already agreed a deal to move on after becoming disillusioned with losing his place under Kenny. His release clause was met and off he went.

Similar things could be said with Maxi, who wanted to return home.

Either way, that is not the efforts of a new, incoming manager going ‘out of his way to get rid of’ them.

        • Tim Williams says:

and despit everything else both were unfortunately the wrong side of 30 earning champions league wages. now im not an accountant but even i know that is not sustainable in our present place!

        • Chan says:

Jimmy, if BR made an effort to keep Kuyt or Maxi, seeing how lacking we are in attack and how Kuyt especially tends to score important goals, would not they have stayed?

Both never really wanted to leave and Kuyt especially was loved by the fans.

  • Steve says:

How are people still defending this joke of a manager ? All summer signings arr rubbish , poor tactically , no plan B , stubbornly still pickin his pet Joe Allen one of our worst players ever
Rodgers is an embarrassment to LFC , should have gone ages ago

  • simon says:

oooooooh Look … more pathetic excuses from the Rodgers asskissers

  • Fez says:

BR need to be sacked ASAP , the man is a dope , we r out of cup cos he picks bad team . FSG need experience manager quick or suares will go . there r no excuses for this awful season

    • Tim Williams says:

why was it a bad team in your opinion?

sack rodgers now and how long does the next manager get?

      • Chan says:

Excellent managers like Rafa, well, a couple of years.

Crap managers like BR, should not be here in the first place.

  • Gary says:

Just like with the players , LFC should expect the highest standards and results from the manager too . Rodgers has failed miserably in every department – tactics , transfers , playing style and most importantly results .

Any fool , with the players Rodgers has at his disposal wiuld have beat at least a few of the top 10 sides , but not Rodgers . Rodgers has got us dumped out of both cups by his foolish selections

And his loyalty towards such a desperately poor player in Joe Allen deseves the sack alone . Disgraceful mediocrity from day 1 right up to the present

    YNWA

    • Tim Williams says:

were you saying the same last year at this point? ok we are out of Carling and FA Cup but in the league there is 4 points difference and we have scored more goals. We have lost a lot f experience since then and brought through a lot of young players, what did you expect?

I dont know why going out of the domestic cups should signal the end of Rodgers, before last year when were w epreviosuly in a final? not like all of a sudden this year we got no where near.

  • Hud says:

pickin Allen on sunday was sheer stubbornness and arrogance by BR . Do we want a manager who puts his little pet ahead of whats best for the team ?????

    • Tim Williams says:

how so? are you seriously laying the blame for the loss on Sunday at the feet of Allen?

      • Hud says:

        WTF ???
are you the local troll ? why are u spamming everyones comments ?

I came on here to leave a comment to express an opinion , not to get into a debate with the sites troll

        Get a life mate

        • Tim Williams says:

so on a blog site where people leave opinions and their own thoughts and comments you didnt think that someone may disagree with you? that someone may challenge your opinion?

trolling comments? spamming? make your mind up. if you think Allen is rubbish and BR messed up thats up to you, I disagree but am interested in your opinion.

Surely the joy of the sport is the opportunity to discuss with people a shared joy. Check out the conversation I have had with taintlessred, we disagree on matters but each discuss our views like adults.

but hey this is probably trolling eh Hud. If you want to have a chat about allen and Rodgers lets do it, would love to hear your points, but if you can only manage a sentence then…

        • Hud says:

If i wanted a debate , i would talk to my mates , i didnt come on here to be harrassed and questioned by someone like u

Your entitled to your opinion , i couldn’t care less what it is . I didnt put down anyone’s comments or opinions , i responded to NOBODY , i just left a quick opinion to the article

What you are doing IS trolling , you are spamming replies on everybody’s comments

        • Tim Williams says:

harrassed? I wrote one sentence asking 2 questions and you are harrassed very precious lad.

What I am doing is merely asking questions. Not spamming mate, just disagreeing

        • Hud says:

I left an opinion . end of . I dont see why i should have to justify or explain my opinions to a troll like you . I never questioned your opinions

Now jog on , if i wanted to tallk , it wouldn’t be to someone like you

      • Tim Williams says:

You don have to at all, I didn’t ask you to did I? I merely saw your post, disagreed with your opinion and attempted to engage you in mature discussion about it.

      • Chan says:

Tim its clear, you are very busy defending BR even though its bad for our club. What exactly is your motivatuion really?

I mean this man had zero tophies and virtually no top flight management experience bar one season with Swansea. He paid 26 mill for 2 dudes in his 6 months here even as everyone knows we are cash straped.

He is now out of 2 cup competitions having just lost to a team on a free fall 2 divisions down and he laid all the blame on his players, none on himself.

All these and here you are busy defending him talking as if we have the nest Shanks on our hands.

Who are you really? Part of BR’s PR team? A United fan?

        • Tim Williams says:

Seen a lot of your comments Chan, and im not sure how having a different opinion makes me a United fan! ah well.

My points have not been in relation personally to Rodgers moreover the sacking of a manager after 6 months! That is ridiculous. Brining in someone now starts the whole process again of losing players the new manager doesnt fancy and him trying to build his own side over a number of transfer windows. Which ever way you look at it the club faces a bumpy road ahead, and how long does the new guy get? What if it was say Hiddink and in the same period he mirrored Rodgers results? I bet you and others would call for his head then.

and on the cup exit, its not like Rodgers is the first liverpool manager to be knocked out of cup competitions and by lower league opposition.

        • Chan says:

Tim please tell me honestly, when we sacked RH, were you not just like us, heaved a sigh of relief as well?

Or is there one set of rules for RH and another for BR.

Oh by the way RH won trophies in the Swedish league, Ex-National Manager of the Swiss, and managed Inter and still got the boot.

What has BR got to deserved our patience?

  • King Kenny II says:

If You Care About LFC Mr Henry /Werner Then Please Please Please Please Please Give Us A Decent Manager . This Ridiculas Joke Of An Experiment Must Stop. A Boycott Of Merchandise Must Be Called For Til Rodgers Is Removed

  • Nicky Cuzin says:

Rodgers has to go. And here some reasons why.
1 He’s a small club manager with little ambition. (“Our ambition is to finish as high as last season” – remember this quote?)
2 He has already a bigger net spend than Kenny and worse results. (Kenny 35m vs BR 37m)
3 Failure to beat any team in top half.
4 Awful home record (Already lost as much as Kenny in 18 month)
5 Spineless and coward players were brought in by BR in place of fighters. Even Spearing would have done a much better job, at least he’s not afraid to go into a full-blooded challenge.
6 The team has only 5 world-class players (Gerrard, Suarez, Johnson, Reina, Carragher) left and none of them started vs Oldham.
7 You don’t win anything with kids. Even the famous Man Utd double came when they had experienced internationals like Cantona.
8 Lots of attacking players seem to go down too easily this season. Suarez did that, Sturridge spent most of Oldham game on the floor and Sterling should have been sent off for a blatant dive in the 2nd half having already been booked.
9 Don’t even get me started on that “he needs time” nonsense. Pathetic excuse. This is Liverpool and not some Swansea.
10 Swansea seem to do better without him. League Cup final, top half. And they play attacking football under Laudrup not backways-sideways passing. By the way, only 5 Rodgers’s players left in Swansea first XI.
11 Stop this pathetic experiment now or the Reds would end up like Aston Villa. Pathetic manager, inexperienced gutless players, relegation fight.

P.S. Fantastic quote, John! Exactly what’s required!
P.P.S. Tim, please, do not comment on that. You have a solid opinion and you stick to it. That’s great, but I’m not here to discuss or argue, I’m here to state something that for me is obvious.

    • James D says:

Wow . The voice of reason . well said Nicky , everything 100% true and yes .. its all totally obvious

    • Tim Williams says:

Nicky I enjoyed your response and could have started a decent conversation exactly what this site is all about. You have strong opinions and I have strong opinions yet you dont want to discuss? disappointing lad.

As you seem capabe of backing up your view let me ask you a question to follow on from your response…

Rodgers is sacked this second, who do you bring in and why?

How long do you give them?

      • Hud says:

The guy asked you not to comment – yet you still comment . That is trolling . Get a life – he doesn’t want to speak to you . Editor should ban this troll

        • Tim Williams says:

You don’t want to talk to me yet feel the need to comment on a reply I left someone else?? Hmmm and you claim I troll?

Hud, this is a football opinion site, if you leave an opinion some will agree and some will disagree. Some will be more vocal in that and some may challenge.

Lets agree to disagree, you don’t want to talk about footie, your choice mate

    • pat says:

all of what nicky says is true

  • Jonas says:

Rodgers must go for all the reasons Nick said . He has a worse record than Hodgson and we couldn’t wait to sack him

ps . Its embarrassingly sad the excuses sime people are making up to excuse Rodgers

  • Olsen says:

Rodgers need to be sacked . excuses excuses excuses is all we hear . He has messed up again and again
. if he stays , Suarez will go and Rodgers wont attract top players

I Think its pathetic how anyone is defending Rodgers , clearly worst manager in our modern history

    Wake up Liverpool fans

  • Nicky Cuzin says:

    @Tim,
If I were LFC owner I’d go with Carra or would apologize and bring King Kenny back. But that’s something more out of my fantasy and dreams rather than reality.
Anyway, Liverpool is still one of the biggest clubs in the world and I’m sure that there’d be enough managers willing to do the job. One is going to be available in the summer after his spell in Chelsea, I guess…
Second place used to be a disaster, but the standards have fallen dramatically. Owners are at fault, managers, players even fans. We as supporters don’t seem to demand enough from the club.
Look at Real Madrid, they think their season is a disaster, but they are in a Cup semi, have a decent chance of winning Champions League and have as much points lost in their League as Man City in PL. Now that’s ambition!
Liverpool got 34 pts out of possible 69 in the league so far. 22 pts behind Man Utd and the gap is widening with every round of games. Oldham (League 1) show more desire to win a game of football. But for terrible piece of refereeing (blatan handball by Luis) Mansfield (Conference) score as much as the Reds. Could it get any worse?
And what does it take to sack a flop of a manager nowadays? I have a friend who’s Aston Villa fan. He seems to break into tears when we talk about his club who won 7 championships and a European Cup. I, personally, don’t want to end up like him. So SACK BR NOW!!!
P.S. @James D, @Hud, @pat, @Jonas and everyone who wants Rodgers sacked, it’s up to us to voice our concern. We as fans have to make sure that he’s gone. Whether by boycotting matches or merchandise, tweeting @LFC or @John_W_Henry to get rid of him. I hope we can do it!
P.P.S. Tim, I respect and can see your opinion, but for me there’s nothing to discuss as I’ve already made up my mind. I hope you stay loyal to your beliefs as they are commendable. Keep writing your articles, I try to read them as often as I can, though cannot say I agree with any of the points you make.

    • Tim Williams says:

Hi Nicky, thanks for getting back to me, it may shock some but I love chatting with people who hold a different opinion than me and are willing to support their points like Nicky.

First off, please please please dont tweet the owners, that is very cringeworthy. The only way to make any change to anything in the game is to vote by feet. Whether it be beef with manager, player ticket prices (real issue) the club will only listen if their pockets are effected. You want to instigate change you convince people not to but tickets for a macth day, the owners will listen then.

I didnt want rafa or kenny sacked simple as. I want my club to have stability. Carra? excellent shout, but I would want him to coach first and really experience the off field envirnoment befoe taking the managers job.

Sacking Rodgers now would see someone new come in with new ideas and new philosophys, these take time to instill, there wont be instant success. Sustained success takes time, would you be prepared to wait even more time while a new manager starts again to build a new team? would our top players?

  • pep says:

Tim Williams the one man crusade to keep Brendan Rodgers at our club – sounds like a Man U fan to me

    • Tim Williams says:

pep your contributions to this have been invaluable.

Yes as a man u fan i take time to interact with and write for a liverpool fan site.

If you bothered to actually look into my comments you would see that my argument is less about rodgers as a man but more about the clubs direction long term.
