LFC defender Martin KellyMARTIN Kelly has become the latest Liverpool FC player to commit his future to the club after signing a long-term contract on Friday afternoon.

The 22-year-old, who is currently out with a cruciate ligament injury, told liverpoolfc.com:

“I’m delighted to have signed. It means everything to me and my family. I’ve been at Liverpool since I was seven, so it’s in my heart and I love the club”.

Kelly added: “When you play in the Liverpool shirt, you have to show the fans what it means. I just love playing and trying my hardest for the supporters and for my family.”

Kelly was born in Whiston and is a product of the Liverpool academy. He made his debut for the club against Lyon in October 2009 and has gone on to make 54 first-term appearances. Kelly received his first England cap in May last year and was called into England’s Euro 2012 squad after Gary Cahill withdrew due to a fractured jaw.

The defender is one of a number of first-term players to have committed his future to Liverpool and he joins the likes of Luis Suarez, Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger, Jonjo Shelvey and Raheem Sterling, who have all signed new contracts at Anfield since Brendan Rodgers was appointed.

Ian Ayre said described Kelly’s new deal as “fantastic news” and added:

“I think everybody has been starting to see and enjoy Martin’s potential and the work he has showed to get into the first team and these are the things we are looking for. He was very unfortunate to get his injury but he has worked very hard with the physios and the medical team and hopefully we’ll see him back soon.”

Kelly is the future replacement for Carra . This is great news , he just needs a injury free run

Kelly is the best of all the young defensive players at the club. When he’s fit he’s a monster of a player, it’s easy to forget Capello was a big fan and Hodgson took him to the Euros as a senior. He’s a better right back option than Wisdom and perhaps a better centre back option than Coates. The key though is to recover his fitness and stay injury free. Stevie was injury prone as a young lad but came through it. Being a cruciate I hope Kelly doesn’t lose his pace.

He is still young give him confidence. His tackles are too hard and he hurts himself and also results in free kicks given away. He will mature in due course though . Give him time.
He cannot be Carragar so must.

Mixed opinions about Kelly. I like him he will be great I’m sure. People need to be a bit more optimistic this is a good sign players wanting to be at the club its only good to hear the young players saying the right thing. I was totally shocked about carragher

Great player , or will be if he stays fit .

I think Wisdom has overtaken him, Kelly needs to work seriously hard to get back in the team but its a good dilemma to have so many options in one position, i dont see him as a centre back.

    • TaintlessRed says:

Wisdoms only played due to Kelly’s injury. Kelly is much better offensively and provides forward drive and is willing to take on the opposition full back. Andre, though he’s done really well, still thinks like a centre back even when in the opposition half. If Kelly hasn’t lost his pace when he returns I expect he’ll show his worth and move ahead of Andre. With Carra’s retirement and Seba’s inconsistency I’d expect him to challenge for a centre half position as well.
