Coutinho, Suarez and the Transfer Window

|

LFC player Daniel SturridgeTHE anti-climax of the transfer window leaves me feeling that Liverpool FC yet again, missed a trick – we only brought in two players.

Daniel Sturridge has settled well and so far, so good. He seems at home and is very going well.

The team is incomplete but the squad has lost a few high earning, low contributors and for that we can all be grateful.

Philippe Coutinho is a relative unknown to me and I can’t wait to see him in the shirt and make up my own mind. In my opinion we needed a few more players – maybe a centre-back and a defensive midfielder.

Newcastle United spent £1.8 million on Moussa Sissoko who is strong, lightning quick and scores goals; he looks very good two games in. We’ve spent £8.5million on a man half his size but maybe he’ll prove to have more than just physical stature in common with Mr. Messi.

It would be ‘nice’ if the Reds could pick up a bargain for the first team. A player snapped up for less than £2 million, who turns out great. I can’t remember the last that happened, can you? (Bosman/free transfer signings don’t count).

At the same time I am glad we didn’t pay over the odds with any panic buying errors, on the face of it, there are no over the hill wastes of money in this window which makes a very nice change. Philippe Coutinho’s hamstring issues leave me with reservations but I’m hopeful he’ll prove to be a shrewd piece of business for Liverpool.

A note to the innocent (aka gullible)

A man called Toby contacted me to let me know he had just heard Luis Suarez said he is so happy at Anfield that even if we don’t get Champions League football he’ll be here next season.

I may be a cynic but if Suarez continues to play well and doesn’t get into any more trouble then in my opinion he’ll be gone in the summer (should we not get into the Champions League). Barcelona, Bayern Munich et al will knock on the door and I would not blame him for going.

He wasn’t born a supporting LFC, he didn’t grow up kicking a ball around the streets of Anfield. He’s paid well and plays well and if in the summer an acceptable (£40+ million) offer came in for him and he wanted to go then he would go with my blessings if we can’t offer him what he deserves – the Champions League stage.

An armchair fan who loves the stadium experience but likes the bread and butter of replays, moronic pundits, a drink in a pub atmosphere. LFC is my religion.

Common sense is missing from football but the situation is always complicated so I endeavour to give opinion and encourage discussion and thought about LFC.

Was thinking the same. Ed, talk to someone about your depression don’t put it on us.

I agree I don’t believe that last statement is true, I watched an interview on him when he first joined and I remember him saying when playing FIFA on playstation he always picked Liverpool as his team. I believe he will stay.

While I think that Liverpool should’ve tried to sign Jack Butland and send him back on loan, I really don’t think that we missed a trick. The two players we’ve brought in are young, hopefully talented (Sturridge obviously has been showing how good he is) and will work well with BRs system.

As for a £2 million bargain or some good talent at that price, let’s be completely blunt, that’s never going to happen with Liverpool. No matter how far we fall from the top of the Premier League, we will always be the once mighty Liverpool FC, and any time we enquire the price for any player, the price will immediately go up by a couple million unless the other club is desperate and near administration.

As for the Suarez thing, he has a contract with Liverpool for 4-5 more years, so we’re in a very strong position regarding his future. And if Suarez himself says he’s happy at Liverpool and it’s his home now (and that he always chose Liverpool on PlayStation as a kid), well, who are we to not be optimistic? 😉

Everybody said Liverpool had the best January dealings. Coutinho & Sturridge for £20m was fantastic and I’m pretty happy..

I feel let down by FSG and co. – look at our bench yesterday – we had damn all decent attacking players . We needed alot more than 2

But why are thinking or instigating suareZ away,we need to keep all our best players to compete very well for EPL next season that will help us,we just have to strenting our centra back, our strong defensive midfield, goal keeper and that is all

liverpool never missed a trick , i believe the players are beginning to play as a team , a liverpool team , i reckon if we keep going the way we’ve been playing the rewards will follow , i like what rodgers is doing and fsg , they said from the off, its going to be built up from scratch , just like it was when shanks arrived , i believe its gonna be awesome too , im born n bred in anfield area , watch my liverpool from the boys pen from the rafters on the kop roof through the 70’s on wards , this team giving time and additional players will do amazing things , takes bit of time , the hard work is on going, WE WILL GET THERE , COS WE’RE LIVERPOOL

The last bargain we had was Sami Hyypia. Bought for about £2.5 million and was at the club for 10 seasons. We’ve stopped the ridiculous prices for players and are not considered the soft touch of a couple seasons ago. What we need now are a couple more experienced players. We’ve let Maxi, Kuyt and Bellamy go so that balance needs to be redressed.

We also need another defensive midfielder in the mould of Yaya Toure. Diame is good on the ball, great tackler, quick and big. We are in danger of becoming a small team that can be over powered by the likes of Stoke, West Ham and lower league opposition. If we lose Lucas again, we’re going to struggle again. We haven’t got the quality of Barca and we’re also in a much more physical league. Carragher might have another season, but we need a defensive leader once he’s gone.

    • TaintlessRed says:

I agree that we need a powerful defensive midfielder as well as a commanding centre back. We’ve made too many defensive errors either dye to individual errors or the centre halves not getting the support they’ve needed from the midfielders.
I’m a fan of Lucas but he isn’t at the level he was before the injury, and even if he attains it he still lacks pace and a real physical presence. It’ll do him hood yo have real competition for his place.

This team will go places with time let’s iive the faith

  • stevieG says:

Definitly missed a trick . Our squad is severely short , Sneidjer is world class was ready and willing , Llorente was cheap and available bur Rodgers gets one decent prem player , and a kid who may or may not adapt to english soccer

Rodgers wanted experience , FSGs stupid policy meant we got left short , again !

    • Matt says:

I agree I think we needed experience, Wesley would’ve been perfect but we’ve done well with Sturridge so far. I think we need a keeper and defensive mid to cover for Lucas because Allen certainly doesn’t cut out for it.

  • fotheringham says:

Suarez feels he owes Liverpool some loyalty , He will stay one more season then will look to further his career elsewhere .

And who can blame him , we aint going anywhere with fsg not willing to compete with top clubs financially

  • M. says:

It was definitely a good window – we bought 2 players who ‘ll definitely improve the squad (‘ll start in best XI) & more over had been able to off-load some useless high earners.

Having said that, we must re-look at our scouting team. Not only Moussa Sissoko, but NUFC had some of the best business from France with real quality players, Spurs & Arsenal also had decent purchase from outside UK, but somehow, I feel we have hardly any contact outside UK.

Since the Rafa days, all 3 of our British Managers are spending crazy (Rogers for Allen) money for British players, but similar or better quality players were/are available in mainland Europe or Latin America.

  • Eddie says:

Disappointing window . After the disgraceful let down of the summer , we were all expecting 4 or 5 players , we got 1 with a bit of quality , and 1 kid with potential . our squad is sooooo short compared to top 4 clubs

  • shibashis says:

I do not think January is the time when squad overhauls are possible or advisable, is it? Keeping that in mind it was not all bad this window. Although I do think we paid more than we should have for Sturridge, no matter how many goals he has been scoring.
But it was not a bad window, could have been better though.
