Hyypia Anfield REDS defensive legend Sami Hyypia has spoken of the happiness and pride he feels when looking back at his time playing for Liverpool FC.

Hyypia played over 400 games for the club (as well as 105 games for his national side, Finland) and was one of the central figures for Gerard Houllier in the infamous treble winning season in 2001.

The big Fin then played another huge part in helping Liverpool win the Champions League in 2005 under Rafa Benitez. He departed Anfield in 2009 to join Bayer Leverkusen as a player/coach, but still has fond memories of his time at Liverpool.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Hyypia said:

“The day I signed my contract with Liverpool, that’s one day I will never forget because Liverpool was my favourite team when I was younger and it was a dream come true. I was there a long time and I had to leave friends there – it was a bit emotional.

“Now I think of my Liverpool career with joy, especially the fans – I always had a good relationship with Liverpool fans. I guess they saw I always tried my best on the pitch. I made mistakes as well and hopefully they forgive me for those mistakes and hopefully I did more good things than mistakes.”

Hyypia is currently the joint manager of Leverkusen, and his team lie in third place in the Bundesliga behind Borussia Dortmund and current leaders, Bayern Munich.

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.
