Brendan Rodgers: style and substance?

Rodgers Liverpool AnfieldIF someone asked you to name the football kits most synonymous with stylish, aesthetically pleasing football what kit would you name? You may perhaps mention the red and white kit of the Ajax team of the 70’s, or maybe the bright orange of the Dutch team intent on ‘total football’. In more recent years, aesthetically pleasing football has primarily been played by one club – Barcelona.

Why do we ask this question? Well, if we’re going to talk about Brendan Rodgers we must mention ‘aesthetically pleasing’ football as this pretty much encapsulates Rodgers’ football philosophy.

Possession is a great feature of the Rodgers style which has seen Liverpool score some beautiful team goals this season. Off the ball his teams always apply pressure on the opponents and work hard by pressing high up the pitch to win the ball back.

What is Brendan Rodgers management style?

Rodgers began his managerial career at Watford and despite a rocky start, he performed relatively well for them. After a decent season he headed to Reading where he only lasted 6 months. 7 months later he was given the top job at Swansea City and it was here that he began to really make his mark.

Having inherited a side that Roberto Martinez had moulded into a stylish and attacking footballing side, he earned Swansea promotion and kept them in the top flight the following season. He was then offered the Liverpool job and has been there for just under a year. Rodgers has attempted to implement the same ‘attractive’ and ‘stylish’ way of playing at Anfield; but so far it has borne very little fruit.

What tactics does Rodgers like to use?

Rodgers is a true professional manager – he will use every bit of technology and all types of football equipment available to him. He analyses every aspect of the game and is very thorough in that regard. This analytical approach shows that he is indeed a student of the game and as a student, he certainly has a great knowledge of how his opponents will set out their stool in any given match. This relies on a lot of passing, movement and patience.

Has Rodger’s philosophy been successful at Liverpool?

Rodger’s has been hamstrung somewhat by the financial situation he has encountered since arriving at Liverpool. The previous Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish – along with sporting director Damien Comolli – spent a lot of money, and as a result Liverpool have not necessarily had the funds available to buy the personnel that Rodgers needs in order to effectively implement his philosophy. Whether or not he gets the money in the summer could prove to be crucial.

Liverpool are in a rebuilding stage, the manager must therefore be given time to achieve this. Although in terms of league positions he has not improved on last year’s performance, the style of play is being moulded into something that can be built upon in the future.

Will it be successful?

Time will tell. Rodgers is a stubborn man and will certainly want to ensure that his philosophy is adhered to; however the top clubs like Liverpool do not always have an abundance of patience. Although Rodgers is certainly a great coach, the jury is not yet out on Rodgers time as a Liverpool manager. At Discount Football Kits we feel that this summer’s transfer activity will prove crucial to the future of Rodgers and the club. More shrewd signings like Sturridge are what is needed.

Rodgers is probably one of the worst managers in Liverpool history , if not thee worst

Tactically naive. Unable to change to plan B. Defensively totally inept

Rodgers was sacked by Reading for being useless…how he hasn’t been sacked already by us is astonishing

He is dragging this club into mediocrity

  • David Tobin says:

Who cares about style . It’s winning that matters- and BR seems useless at that. He has spent 55 million on mostly rubbish. This guy is out of his depth. Get rid ASAP

The worst manager ever. One-man team. Useless tactics sideways-backways passing depending solely on Suarez to do smth on his own. Nonsense about money available.
Dalglish spent 35 million net on transfers.
Rodgers spent 45 million net on transfers.
Check the stats before writing nonsense.
