Thiago Liverpool FC England SpainLIVERPOOL FC will be taking 5 players to Israel to compete in UEFA’s U21 European Championships.

Jack Robinson, a late call up following a withdrawal, joins Captain Jordan Henderson, Andre Wisdom and Jonjo Shelvey for the three Lions.

Fabio Borini, having recovered from his various injuries this season and scored on his return for Liverpool, has made the cut for the Italians. In fact it’s possible the teammates will face each in their opening fixture on the 5th June.

Already the most represented English team, the Reds could have been even better represented had Raheem Sterling not been suffering from a persistent thigh problem and Suso not lost his place, albeit in a very strong Spanish team, due to a lack of game time.

There are only 8 teams competing, so to even qualify has been a good achievement, and while there are weaker teams like the Israelis and Norwegians (both in England & Italy’s group), the remaining four are also strong footballing nations: Spain, Russia, Netherlands and Germany.

None of the five Liverpool players play week in week out for the Reds (except when there have been injuries), so all will be fresh and should definitely benefit from the experience.

Henderson, Shelvey and Borini all have senior caps, but Brendan Rodgers recently cited the benefit that Juan Mata gained from playing in youth international tournaments earlier in his career.

“Look at someone like Juan Mata. Two years ago he dropped down from the senior Spain squad to the U21s and helped them win the tournament.

“A year later he was part of the team who won Euro 2012 and then last summer he went off to the Olympics. This season he’s gone on and played more than 60 games.

“Major tournaments can be really beneficial in terms of helping players in their development. I am sure if our players get that experience this summer then they will come back to us as better players.”

With the exception of Robinson, the other four are generally starters for their country’s U21 teams, and key players at that, so I for one will be wishing them well and hoping they make the most of their opportunity.

Gabriel Darshan (Writer) - aka Sutha Nirmalananthan aka TaintlessRed. I am a lifelong Liverpool fan who has followed the Reds from near (e.g. living in Kirkby) and far (e.g. living in Johannesburg), though am again living back home in the UK. I’ve watched football in stadia all around the world, from the Maracana to the Camp Nou, though Anfield will of course always be the greatest! I enjoy healthy football debate, preferring reasoned analysis based on sound evidence over gossip.
