Kolo Toure – worth the gamble?

Toure Liverpool targetRUMOURS of a potential move for Manchester City’s Ivorian centre-back Kolo Toure have caught fire in the past few days with some respected media outlets suggesting that the former Arsenal defender is even pencilled in for a medical at Melwood ahead of a free transfer.

With Toure’s contract running out in the summer, it seems as though the defender has been earmarked as the leader and the experienced head that Liverpool will sorely need after the loss of Jamie Carragher to retirement.

It is no secret that the Reds need at least two centre-backs this summer and if one of them arrives without any transfer fee then this allows Brendan Rodgers to spend heavily on a potential partner for Toure. For me, it is a shrewd bit of short-term business as it allows us to bolster our defence without spending any money – of which there does not seem to be a great deal of.

Despite struggling for form since being banned from football for taking banned substances, Toure still harbours the Premier League experience that would not only benefit the team on the pitch but also off it as his knowledge would no doubt enhance the ability of some of our younger defenders such as Martin Kelly, Andre Wisdom and Stephen Sama.

Whether or not this rumour comes to fruition, there is no question that Rodgers will have to battle with the owners in order for them to sanction a move for a defender that is now 32 years of age. However, FSG could be swayed by the fact there is no transfer fee involved and the reality that the club can’t afford to sign two quality centre-backs and still have a budget left to bring in further, much needed reinforcements.

Making early moves in the transfer window is encouraging, especially after the debacle of last season’s summer window, and with a move for Toure on the cards, the evident problems within the squad seemingly look as though they are going to be resolved.

Give us your thoughts – is Toure somebody you would like to see at Liverpool? With no transfer free is he worth the gamble?

Good move, 3 years younger than Carragher, should get a good couple of years service from him and provide good cover also, still need at least one more centre half too, or two more if Skrtel or Coates go.

  • Amit says:

I like it. He is experienced but also as important is that he has pace. We need pacey centre backs so we can defend higher up. He is also used to a passing game from his time with Arsenal. Win win in my book.

  • Matt says:

He’s free, experienced and willing to take a pay cut. Why not?

  • Dean Fitzpatrick says:

Fukn excellent idea, hopefully skrtel steps up too.I think Coates need to be playing consistently maybe loan him out,he is still only young moving from south America to play for Liverpool isn’t easy.lets see iturra, capel, begovic an couple other decent signings

  • Red Scouser says:

Over the hill . He is not the player he was

  • Erin says:

Good idea. 2 years of service, experience. Win win . Now, get skertel back to his usual self and focus on a striker. Cover for Suarez, a mf and an attacking mf. Job done. Clear out downing please.

  • Pnderito says:

Yeah, we absolutely need this ivorian. He is better than A. Williams.

  • collins says:

I dont like this signing as his best years are gone…… but if he is backup n on low wage its ok……. we aim to be where man city are then we should not be signing their rejects unless for backup

  • Islander says:

If we can get him on a 2-3 year contract under 60K per week, I’m all in. Good speed for a defender his age, maybe he can talk his brother into demanding a transfer to us.

‘and the reality that the club can’t afford to sign two quality centre-backs’
When did this become a reality?? The club have spent a lot since FSG came in. The only reality is that they want value for money.

  • Andrew says:

Toure was brilliant 2 to 3 years ago . But now ? I don’t think so

Can’t see FSG paying for someone his age . Still he is better than Williamd

  • armchairlfcfan says:

It begs the question, “Do we have the right Toure?” If No, then forget him.

  • Fergal Flaherty says:

Yes got the wrong Kolo….it’s Coloccini we need, Fabrizio Coloccini is one of the finest defenders in the PL and wasted at Newcastle. Would fit in perfect at Anfield

  • Tommy says:

No druggies at our club please
