Liverpool plan double Belgian swoop

Benteka Villa LFC targetNEWSPAPERS today have reported Liverpool are planning an attempted double-swoop, for Aston Villa’s much talked about forward Christian Benteke, and his fellow Belgian – Sunderland goalkeeper, Simon Mignolet.

The Daily Mail believe that Liverpool are already planning to alleviate their problem regarding strikers by making an approach for Benteke, who has just enjoyed a fine season at Aston Villa.

The paper considers Benteke to be mooted as a replacement for Liverpool’s Uruguayan star Luis Suarez, who they say could “force through his move to either Real Madrid or Atletico.”

With Suarez having scored 30 goals in all competitions last season, Liverpool would need to replace him with another prolific striker and Benteke may just fit the bill after he notched an impressive 23 goals in all competitions for Villa.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is already a known fan of Benteke, after being impressed with his performances against the Reds in the Premiership, including scoring a brace in Villa’s 3-1 victory in December.

Earlier in the season Rodgers described the 22 year-old as ‘Outstanding.’ If Liverpool do decide to pursue Benteke, they will face stiff competition from other top European clubs who are vying for the Belgian’s services.

Along with their interest in Benteke, another Belgian has caught the Reds’ eye; Sunderland keeper Simon Mignolet, who The Guardian have reported has peaked Liverpool’s interest. Like Benteke, Mignolet is being lined up as a possible replacement.

However, it is Pepe Reina who may be making way for him with a wave of rumours linking him with a move back to Spain, most notably with Barcelona, though things may have changed as Victor Valdes has expressed his desire to stay with the Catalans for another year.

Mignolet is said to be Liverpool’s number one choice to replace the Spaniard, though they are also keeping tabs on Stoke’s Asmir Begovic.

Mignolet’s credentials speak for themselves, as he scooped up his club and supporters’ Player of the Year award. Another reason Liverpool are interested in Mignolet is they are hopeful that he will have a lower asking price than the £15 million Stoke are expected to slap on Begovic if Rodgers and co come knocking.

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.

Nothing in this one. Just press whipping it up and linking Villa’s best players with the top 6 as they do every year to fill column spaces in the summer. Liverpool are one of the last of the Sky 7 clubs to be linked with Benteke, only Chelsea and Man U to go now. Without being purely selfish I have watched Benteke week in week out not just for 5 minutes on MOTD every Saturday like most of these journos and he would be making a big mistake to leave Villa now and expose himself to a different type of pressure at 22 with one decent season behind him in a World Cup year. The problem is he will be constantly pimped around by his Agent to the highest bidder irrespective of whether the move is good for his football career (obviously it would be for his bank balance) I hope Suarez stays as he was the best player to play at Villa Park last year by a country mile IMO. Benteke I feel will be in a position to move next summer

If reina do leave both begovic and mignolet r good replacement option. I reallyyyyyy want brendon to buy erikson though he’s a quality player. Benhafa or navas for the rm, diame or benaga dm to give lucas competition, and micah richards cd. That’s definite top 4 next season and if suarez go to real take higuain+40mill or 60mill and get benteke. And aspas is almost a done deal.

Rodgers once described Rice Krispies as “outstanding”.

More rubbish from the Express being re-quoted as if it is gospel.

Tekkers is a star but needs to build on his great season, not go to a club like Liverpool that has the potential to break you (Downing, Carroll, Henderson) as much as make you.

Downing was fantastic in his last year at VP but Liverpool have dragged out of him anything that was good and he looks a shadow of the player that turned out at VP. Ditto Young (at Utd) and Milner (at City). The grass is not always greener!

Equally, if he does go and fetches a fee in the mid £20m’s + then, given what Lambo achieved in last summer’s window (with the Bent and NZogbia money), I am sure that we are in for some interesting times at VP.

    • Eoin says:

Milner has been excellent at City! Ask any City fan who actually goes to the match.

  • Paul Messenger says:

If there was an offer for Benteke of say £25m plus then Villa would be crazy to turn it down. Benteke’s agent will go on and on until he get the move and the agent adds 10% into his own account. If not now then it will be January window or next summer. It will run on just like the Gareth Barry saga upsetting his team mates and our supporters week in week out. We dont need that do we, so take the big bucks now just in case he is a one season wonder its happened before. When you think he nearly went on strike to get this move to Villa, ( Where was Rodgers and Wenger then?) and twelve months later he wants out again. Ungreatful greedy sod.

You can have bent and given instead. Bentekes closer to carroll than suarez. Rodgers wouldn’t know what to do with him.

  • kersh says:

I say sell Suarez(50m)+Alonso, Carrol(15m), Downing(7m),Assaidi(3m),Spearing(1m),Skrtyl(10m)..That’s 86mil + The owners put in another 14mil and we got 100mil… Buy Jackson Martinez/Higuin(20m), Negredo/L.Muriel(10m), Erriksen(15m), Munien/Benega(15m), Papadopolus(15m), Digne(5m) and Jesus Navas(15m)… With those signings including Toure, Aspas n Alonso I think Top4 garaunteed!!! LoL might even challenge for the league who knows

  • Chris b says:

Benteke will be at villa next season at least whatever happens and it’s the best decision for him right now

  • Raam says:
