ArmeniaLIVERPOOL’S hopes of acquiring the services of their main target, Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Shakhtar Donetsk, have finally been scuppered as the Armenian has completed a move to Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund today, for a fee of around £23.7 million, according to Sky Sports.

The 24 year old was subject of much interest from Brendan Rodgers this summer, yet despite this there was no official contact between either club and on Monday, Dortmund confirmed that they were in negotiations with the Ukranian champions but that ‘details still needed to be resolved.’

However today the deal was concluded and Liverpool’s hopes of bringing the man who managed the incredible feat of scoring 25 goals in 28 appearances from midfield last season are now over.

It is an unfortunate turn of events for the Reds, who last week were being touted as the favourites to sign the 24 year old, and looked set to overshadow interest from Spurs and Dortmund to bring him to Anfield.

There were no shortage of opportunities for Liverpool to sign the midfielder, as they even reportedly had the chance to buy Mkhitaryan for a cut price fee of around £20 million if he cut ties with Donetsk.

Mkhitaryan made 106 appearances for Donetsk, and scored 46 goals for the club.

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.
