Liverpool wingerLIVERPOOL midfielder Stewart Downing has revealed that he is relishing the opportunity to fight for his place in the squad following the signings of both Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas, Sky Sports have reported.

Downing only managed to make his proper break into the first team last season, making 28 appearances for the club but now, following the duo’s arrival, it seems Downing will yet again have to really go all out to retain his place in the side.

But the England international will not back down from this challenge.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Downing said: “They’re nice lads. They’re very quiet, but it’s their first week at the club, so they’re not used to the area, the lads and how we train. But you can see they’re enjoying it.

“You need at least two or three players in every position to keep people on their toes, especially at a club like this.

“We’re fighting on many fronts – cup competitions and the league – so you have to be strong in every department. But competition brings the best out of players, and hopefully it will in me.

“My targets will be similar to when I got back into the team last season – enjoy it, work hard and play some good football like we did at the end of last season.

“If we play like that again as a team, we’ve got a real chance of success. For me personally, I’ve just got to keep going.”

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.
