FORMER Liverpool midfielder Maxi Rodriguez demonstrated that he still has the magic goalscoring touch, bagging a sumptuous header during his team’s 2-0 victory in the 1st leg semi-final of the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday night.
Maxi’s hometown club, Newell’s Old Boys, claimed the vital win at home against one of the pre-tournament favourites, Atlético Mineiro; a team lead by former Barcelona superstar Ronaldinho, in a line-up which also contains former Manchester City and Everton striker, Jo.
The popular ex-Liverpool number 11 was a livewire throughout the match in Rosario, coming close to doubling his goal tally as the Argentines secured a deserved advantage over their Brazilian rivals in South America’s equivalent of the European Cup.
Newell’s second goal came courtesy of a tremendous free-kick from Ignacio Scocco. The second leg takes place on the 10th July in Brazil.
