Transfer overload detracts from real club interests

Indonesia LFCI’M sick of the transfer season and all the transfer rumours. I’m tired of this recurrent phase in particular, where the £2 million players are moved around like in some strange shell game.

The native people on Canada’s west coast had a tradition called the potlatch where households took turns giving away items to their neighbours who would, in turn have their own potlatch the following season to give it all back again.

It was like the North American tradition of garage sales where people cleaned out their attics and sheds at ridiculous prices to people who would put the same items up for sale the following spring. It is a sort of redistribution of marginal goods.

Most of the meaningful early moves, at least in Liverpool’s case, were a done deal well before the transfer window opened and, promising players such as Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas notwithstanding, there have been no game changers or serendipities that will move us out of seventh place in the coming season.

Will Suarez be back? Will Škrtel leave? Will Erikson leave Ajax for Merseyside? This sort of question has been put so many times that I really don’t care anymore. It’s all speculation and, as such, is little more than a send up so that the rabble (that’s you and me) have something to argue about over a pint and sports tabloids continue to sell papers.

The positives – such as the fact that we will see more of Andre Wisdom in the coming year (unless he leaves on-loan, of course), that Martin Kelly seems recovered from his injury, and that we have a wealth of supporting players and returning young stars – are much more meaningful for me than the latest offer from Arsène Wenger for Luis Suarez. I’m enthusiastic about the duo we have competing for number one keeper and the potential for Raheem Sterling to perform without being overtaxed.

I am looking forward to the continued partnership between Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge. I hope Brendan Rogers gives Fabio Borini a decent run out, and I hope I have been hopelessly wrong about the Swansea Smurf, Joe Allen.

I wish Jonjo Shelvey and Jay Spearing all the luck in the world but not against Liverpool and I hope that Sebastian Coates can find a team that will play him regularly to see if he really warrants his press clippings of two years ago. I am sad about the impending departure of Martin Škrtel but realize he didn’t fit Rodgers’ plan (since Brendan rates him below Kolo Toure).

So keep your speculation to the gender of the Royal Scion and let the only player transfer news I hear be just that – news – not the wishful thinking nor the thinly veiled dislike of particular players.

This season is vital in determining the near future of the club and the discussion of realities has been drowned out by the would-be pundits of the game. If March of next year finds us out of the battle for a European spot, then get out the knives. Until then, trust in the vision of the club and manager and stay tuned for a block buster transfer that will facilitate our climb up the table.

YNWA is not just a jumble of letters but a statement of solidarity, so play the speculation game if you like but keep your eyes on the prize and watch for significant improvement in the side you will support with all your heart in the year ahead.

Yes, very tired of these nonsense…agreed that we shld work with what we have & get rid of those who’s heart are nt with us…the existing team look promising even without the £55m boy (loyalty dies with him)…YNWA

  • stuart campbell says:

No i think all the speculation is good it stops us thinking about what is really going on in the club

  • Steve says:

Lfc shd start thinkin abt life without suarez b/c a player cn b bigger dn a club. nd i pray BR go 4 d rite players

  • Lfcynwaderby says:

There will always be rumours surrounding LFC especially when we do our usual dilly dallying around big targets rather than putting in firm bids. Reality is FSG ate in it for profit. One minute minloget is here to compete with reina and the next reina is on his way out! They must think us fans have memories like goldfish! It’s insulting!

  • Lfcynwaderby says:

We are further away from top 4 than we can imagine! Teams like Southampton and Swansea are showing more intent than us (50m and 30m already spent) personally I’m fed up of the lies we’re being fed by BR and FSG.

Seems the money men are dictating who stays and goes at the club.pepes form has struggled last few years but don’t make out that mignolet was bought for competition then admit that pepes wages didnt justify his place at the club. Yes the ever changing list of who’s who to be coming to the club does get boring and the promise of young players at the club is a genuine reason to be optimistic. This is a massive season for us however, either we bridge the gap or fall hopelessly further behind which is why it is imperative that FSG back the manager and give us the quality that the first team really needs.

    br out!!

nice article…..except for this part “trust in the vision of the club and manager and stay tuned for a block buster transfer that wld facilitate our climb up the table”

    • Fritz Kropfreiter says:

I’m willing to give them one more season to move to, at least, 5th spot. I think that FSG has to loosen the purse strings and sign a world class striker if we lose Suarez and at least a stellar replacement for Martin Škrtel if we keep the Uruguayan. It takes time to rebuild a dynasty but we have to have some concrete indication movement in the right direction.

      • allaboutanfield says:

I feel next season we will most likely to qualify for 5th spot . Unless there’s a miracle and we qualify for the champions League. Without Champion League and without an unlimited budget , we will never be able to attract top players who will make the difference. Now if we were to Suarez for 55 million then there is sill hope for us yet.

      • Gary baker says:

Cop on . There are more signs of us going backwards than forwards . It’s disgraceful that any Liverpool ‘fan ‘ would be content with 5th place before the season starts

        • Fritz says:

Hardly content but a minimum achievement before revolution and demanding that heads roll.

  • stevie says:

We didn’t have two number one goalies last season and we don’t now. What’s the problem?

  • muhammed said says:

We need few speedy and quicker players on both flanks to strenghen our striking forces.

  • Haro says:

Spot on. I’m tired as well. And what makes it worse all of a sudden Liverpool the greatest English club has to kiss ass to get players to sign and compete with other up and coming teams to get players. At the end of day it comes to money. However I can’t wait until the season starts. I’m confident even with or without our boy Suarez will do fine.

  • Jas says:

Wow! How very very well said! All this transfer rumour/fodder is just that!
Agree in entirety with your article! YNWA!

  • allaboutanfield says:

Really can we expect anymore new signnings 2 join liverpool?
