Gerrard: Champions League is a must for players like Luis

LFCLIVERPOOL captain Steven Gerrard has revealed his fear that if Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League, then the Reds will continue to fail to bring in top quality players.

Liverpool striker, and arguably top performer, Luis Suarez has already expressed his desire to leave Anfield in order to play amongst Europe’s elite, and the Reds have also suffered another blow when they failed to sign Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who eventually opted to move to Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund.

Gerrard is currently attempting to persuade Suarez to stay at the club, though he has openly admitted that even if he does convince the Uruguayan, another season without a top four finish could be the final nail in the coffin of Suarez’s career at Anfield.

The England captain said on Sky Sports:

“I think the only person who knows what’s happening is Luis himself, he has a huge decision to make and, as his team-mate, I have to show him respect and give him space to make whatever decision he wants to make.

“But I think everyone knows how highly I rate him and how much I want him to stay, and what we can achieve this season basically depends on whether he stays or goes, I believe.

“While I’ve still got a couple of years left – and maybe a few more who knows – I have to make the most of it. And that is about adding more medals to what I already have and to leave this club in the Champions League. That is the challenge for me personally.

“It is not the same club I joined because we are not in the Champions League, so it becomes an awful lot more difficult to attract the top players. But I think the club’s history and size – we’ve just been on a tour which has seen us play in front of nearly a quarter of a million people in 10 days – means the pull is still here.

“We need to break back into the top four to get back the pull we had four or five years ago when we were comfortably in the Champions League year in, year out and challenging to win it. Players who come and get the club back into the Champions League will experience some of the biggest nights of their career, because playing European football in front of this crowd is different to any other.”

The last time Liverpool played in the Champions League was the 2009/10 competition, and last season the Reds finished a lowly 7th in the Premiership.

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.

If suarez wants to leave for a champions league spot, his such a junk. I thought he gat inspiration and passion, his such a loser, remember what he promised wen he got to Anfield earlier. Now he failed and wants to turn his back on us. I bet it, go suarez and u shall remian irrelevant in EPL as long as FA is alive.

I’m my opinion Fsg need to go! While our new signings maybe good players, they aren’t world class! I’d wanna leave to if I see us signing players like Toure! We need owners with ambition who want to win the prem league…Owners who aren’t afraid to spend to get us there! I’m not saying money fixes everything but it certainly helps! If financial fair play comes into full swing I believe that’s gonna kill our club! Cos we won’t have enough quality in our side and won’t be able to buy that quality! Pls Fsg sell liverpool to owners with ambition… Which world class player would wanna come to a team with downing, allen, borini, ect.. And I manager who has no global pull. I mean would any world class foriegn player want to play for some1 they never heard off??? And now we trying to sign Diego Costa for £21mil??? That’s ludicris in my opinion! Another flop signing for big money mark my word! Our Captain Fantastic needs n deserves to win a EPL medal n he never will under the Fsg regime! Saddens me that he is world class but can’t get an EPL medal! Micheal Owen went to Man United and won a damn Medal!!! FSG are just like the other cowboys who owned LfC, just that they killing LfC a bit slower! It saddens to to the point of tears thinking how we have fallen! When Rafa was in charge we were 1 of the most feared clubs in world football! We use to walk over the likes of Man untd, Barca, Real Madrid, Bayern, Chelsea( even with the special 1)… When the draws for the last 16 used to be held for Champs league these clubs I mentioned use to pray not to draw LfC!!! I want those days back!!? Sad time for our Great club… YNWA!

Fsg have spent a net of £3mil so far this season. If Suarez wants to go then let him go for 50+ mil.. Then Fsg if they are really serious about moving Lfc forward throw in another £50mil. Cos Spurs with their £100mil for Bale are gonna strenghten even further having already signed Paulinho and Soldado! And Arsenal will have bought Suarez. Man city already signed Jovetic, Fernandinho, Navas and Negredo… And I’m certain Chelsea and Man untd are gonna make 1 or 2 big signings!!!

  • REDDY says:

Get in Yilmaz(18mil), Bernard(18mil), Erriksen(15mil), Ever Benega(10mil),iker Munian(10mil), Diame(5mil), Alderwield(12mil), Sakho(13mil) and Cissokho(loan from Valencia with option to buy)… Sell Borini and get Alonso back pls!!! I’m my opinion that’s 9 first team players for Suarez +50mil…With Gerrard, Countinho, Sturridge, Lucas, Agger I think we can get into the top 4. Fsg just have to show some ambition and teach Suarez a lesson! We will finish above Arsenal if we get those players! YNWA

Suarez won’t get CL football here , no chance . So it’s understandable he wants out

The owners(FSG) need to give B Rodgers £50-£80M to spend whether club can keep L Suarez or not, then B Rodgers needs to ship out these Eight/ 8 dead wood average hard working players this summer:

GK B Jones RB J Flanagan CB S Coates

DM J Spearing AM: D Pacheco RW/ RWF: O Assaidi

LW / LWF: S Downing FD: F Borini

These 8 players above could bring in £25-£28M on sales, that and the £50-£80M needed from the owners and these 8 class quality players would replace the 8 dead wood average players we have at club.

Four Defensive players: Key Defensive positions that need strengthening and quality competition for places amongst:

1 :GK: A Mccarthy(23) Of Reading for £4-£7M to compete with Mignolet

2 : CB: K Papadopolous(21) Of Schalke for £12-£15M to compete with Skrtel

3 : CB: T Alderwierld(24) Of Ajax for £7-£9M to compete with Agger and Toure

4 : DM: E Capoue(24) Of Toulouse for £7-£10M to compete with Lucas

Four attacking players: Class, Creative, Goalscoring, Mobile ,Pacey, Quick Players:

5: AM: I Munian(20) Of A Bilbao for £10-£14M to compete with Alberto and Coutinho

6 : RW/ RWF: J Montero(23) Of Monarcas Morelia in Mexico for £4-£7M to compete with Sterling

7 : LW / LWF: B Arfa(26) Of Newcastle for £10-£15M to compete with Aspas and IBE

8 :FD: L Muriel(23) Of Udinese for £10-£14M to compete with Sturridge and Suarez

And if Suarez is sold, Hopefully for no less than £55M or he she be kept at club.

If he Suarez is sold for £55M this summer then these other two attackers should be brought to the club:

    M Reus(24) Of B Dortmund for £17-£24M

    L Adriano(26) Of Shakhtar Donesk for £15-£20M

      Allan bout Anfield,

Another clown, do you seriously think we have been a top 6-10 team for last five seasons for no reason?

Do you think its a coincidence Man United, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton finished above us last season?

All them teams have much better squads than us and more class and quality on their bench than we have?

There is now gaps in the premiership:

The two Manchester Clubs are way ahead in class, depth and quality in league, then there is gap and then chelsea.

Then there is gap and then Arsenal and Tottenham basically are of a similar class and quality in squad class, depth and quality

Then there is another Gap and Everton follows them two and then we follow Everton

Our owners need to invest heavily in the club or we will not be in champions league for next 3-5 years and every year we are out of champions league, we lose out on £20M. We lose out on bringing in class players and it becomes harder and harder to get back in the Champions League.

K Dalglish spent £115M on players during his reign , but Just £40M was net spend. As Our club brought in £75m on player sales(Torres, Babel, Bennayoun, Meireles, Poulsen, Koncheskey and Ngog) and that season we did not Make Champions League.

As our club needs huge surgery completed to playing squad before we can even consider competing for top 4 position and whilst we are trying to get back in Top 3rd and 4th position league. Our main and closest Rivals are looking to retain the Premiership, shows how far we have dropped off the mantle.

And that kills most real true Liverpool fans and until some serious investment is put in side, United will continue to top up their title cabinet and we will be struggling to get back in 3rd and 4th position year in year out.

      Its not rocket science,

Look at the class quality the top 5 teams in league have at their disposal whether in first 11 or on the bench, then look at our squad.

We have too many dead wood average hard working players who would struggle to get into the likes of Fulham, Norwich, Southampton, Stoke, Sunderland, Swansea, West Brom and West Hams first 11, so how can they still be at the club in our 25 man squad.

      GK B Jones
      RB Flanagan
      CB Coates
      DM Spearing
      AM Pacheco
      RW / RWF Assaidi
      LW / LWF Downing
      FD Borini

Those 8 players if were sold, club would not even notice as they offer the club so so little and their fellow team mates any class or quality competition for their places.

And we wonder why we are a top 6-10 team

If FSG don’t aim to spend they need to sell up to some descent arab owners who will as we need some real finances pumped into side (£120-£140M) to get club back amongst the elite sides in europe again.
