Shay GivenACCORDING to ESPNFC, Liverpool are chasing the signatures of both Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given as cover for number 1 goalkeeper, Simon Mignolet, and also Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori in a race against time before the transfer window closes on Monday.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is reportedly interested in bringing the 37 year old Given to Anfield as back-up for summer signing Mignolet, who ousted Pepe Reina as Liverpool’s first choice.

Given, who has been linked with a move to Championship side Doncaster in order to get more playing time, has been told by Villa manager Paul Lambert that he has no future at Villa Park.

The Irishman did not accompany the squad on their pre-season tour of Germany and has been knocked down another peg by Jed Steer, who was on the tour.

Rodgers is hoping to utilise Given’s experience of the game to provide sufficient cover to Mignolet.

Along with goalkeeping priorities, Rodgers is still hopeful of procuring Portuguese centre-back Ilori before 11 p.m on Monday. Liverpool had talks with Sporting Lisbon in June, but the proposed deal collapsed as the two could not agree on a fee for the 20 year old.

However this time around Liverpool are hopeful of bringing Ilori to Anfield for around £6 million.

Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho is also on the Reds’ radar, and could also be on his way to Liverpool.

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.

  • Alex fergie says:

Sasuko- illiri-given-papadopolious-yarmalenco-Moses-torres These are all the names we are being linked to I the closing stages of the window.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we secure at least 3. Come on yarmalenco, come to the reds.

Liverpool suld sign 4 players like keisuke honda, christain eriksen, richado kaka, andriy yarmolenko, ilori n sarko & lets see how dey wouldn’t b amoung d top4.

  • Raam says:

Alex, i’m not against LFC either and above anything else nothing will please not just me but millions around the world if we beat MU but seriously, do we need a back up keeper more or a winger to ease Coutinho’s work load.? Dont we have enough keepers already?LFC should give priority for the positions which urgently need reinforcements. Dont you think so.?

  • Gmarrus says:

Ronaldiamandho, Eriksen has gone to Tottenham for your information.

  • REDDY says:

Yes once again we lost a player to Spurs… Eriksen will be a great player I’m sure and for £11mil he was a bargain.. We paid 15mil for Allen and 17mil for Henderson??? Ian Ayre is the 1 that’s screwing our club up… Spurs look really stong even without Bale but nothings for certain in football nowdays!!! We don’t buy wise.. Where is Alberto? We paid like 8mil for him. We could have bought Eriksen instead for £3m more! I hope we sign iLLori and Sakho and a top forward player. Whe should have went for Lamela but then again our scouts were too busy watching Eriksen n wasting money on Airfare and Entertainment…So I hope we sign Juan Mata, although it might not happen I would love to see Mata-Sturridge-Suarez up front and Countinho supporting behind them. With Stevie and Lucas in midfield. And Sakho and Agger at the heart of the defence!!! To me that’s a team that could take on any other in world football…. Just wish Ian Ayre and Fsg make the plunge and pay up for Mata who is proven in premier league! Chelsea player of the season past 2 seasons! I’d be happy with Fsg paying £30mil for Mata!!! And as for no champions league I think he would still come to us, remember the World cup is coming up and he would want to be a key player and 1st team starter every game. Doubt Chelsea would give him that… So just maybe we might be able to convince him to come to us. YNWA!!!

I would say yes raam we need a quality keeper in case mignolet is injured. Do you remember ? for crucial matches lfc had to play their third goal keeper. Fsg is much much better than the Arab s. The Arabs have donkeys pumped with boosters to death. We want passionate quality horses for the race. Look at skrtel despite being 2nd choice he played for the fans no sulking. As for the players missed most didn’t want to move or rejected LFC.For those available Spurs played a role, they are always interested in hijacking. As for Mufc they didn’t deserve to win I was expecting them to give a better performance. LFC vs Mufc is probably the greatest derby and the mu players should start playing football rather than relying on ref. Alex Ferguson is really missed I think he would have changed the 2nd half but Moyes is new so it will take time. I think its still early and Mu will top again. Bravo to LFC today the pride of Premier league and happy to see them back.
