Reds lose yet another target

Wilian BrazilTHE Liverpool Echo reports how Liverpool’s frustration at losing out on big signings this summer has increased yet again – after they seem to have lost out on Anzhi Makhachkala winger Willian to Spurs, who will sign him in a £30 million deal.

The Reds were hoping to procure the services of the Brazilian, after Anzhi revealed they were planning to cut their playing budget by 60% this summer and even had initial conversations with the Russian outfit regarding the 25 year old.

Liverpool were willing to pay big money to bring Willian to Anfield but Spurs’ interest looks to have scuppered the Reds’ hopes.

Andre Villas-Boas has long been an admirer of Willian, even since his stint at Chelsea. That interest and the fact that Spurs can offer Champions League football this season gives them the edge over Liverpool. Willian flew into London on Tuesday for a medical and discuss personal terms.

Whilst Spurs have splashed out this summer, Liverpool’s transfer spree this season has been a endless series of disappointments, as moves for big names such as Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Shakhtar Donetsk and Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid have failed, despite initial optimism for the move from both sides.

Mkhitaryan instead opted to move to Borussia Dortmund and Costa managed to thrash out a new deal at Madrid.

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.

Don’t think FSG are big enough for Liverpool, only half hearted attempts at signing ‘big’ names. All they want is to reduce wages and sign young potential to sell on at a profit. That’s why they got a cheap manager. Ian Ayre is quite useless too.

  • Dave says:

Wow the writer has managed to qualify spurs for champions league football??? Top man.

Is this really your chosen occupation writer?

  • Allsoccerplanet.com says:

Quite annoying as Willian slipped our fingers…Now Ian Ayre should get his ass down to brazil and start Negotiations for Damiao.

    • Necroomicon says:

When we’re probably in for Damiao, then it will be the next signing for the spuds.
Our staff’s working “hard” to brig in new Players…. Don’t make us augh anymore!

Just go there and PAY the amount, then we’ll get the marquee signing. It’s quite easy !!

  • Fernando says:

Its like lfc is just saying ok we gona try wth this amount fr a player and if they xcept it then good but as soon as another club bids a litle more they back of so yeah half hearted aproaches is costing us qaulity singnings and ayre just gona say we tried thats all and we as supporters must just be happy wow gone are the days of lfc singning world class players

  • dazjohn says:

  • REDDY says:

I’m very unhappy with our squad at the moment. If u look at Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and the both Manchester squads we are way way behind!!! Spurs will sell Bale and pocket 90 odd million which they will spend on a few last minute buys. Arsenal will spend big cos the pressure is on for Wenger… We does that leave us??? 6th or 7th again!!! … Ian Ayre and FSG need to get out and get us owners with some ambition who don’t only think about cutting our wage bill and buying players who they can profit of later!!! In my opinion we need 3 world class players before we can challenge for a Top4 spot.. A Center back, Midfielder, Forward/Winger…. My choices would be Sakho(CB) – Ivan Rakatic(CM) – Angel di Maria/Benzema/Jackson Martinez…. A message to FSG:
If u don’t want to spend a little we will never get CL football. So open your checkbook or get OUT! We in a £7mil profit so far this transfer window! U think us fans are ignorant and blind..

    • dazjohn says:

Spot on with yr comments and suggestions wake up liverpool before its another season to late 🙁

  • LFC_Nigeria says:

    Tottenham qualified for UCL??

  • allaboutanfield says:

I am so beginning to dislike Spurs. But then it could be a blessing for Liverpool .

  • Seve says:

It doesn’t matter whether we lost out on him, I am confident that there are probably other targets hence LFC not going into a bidding war with THFC. However, I am fearful that we might be heading down the same path as last season by not getting in any of our targets. We won’t know for sure until the window closes. There are still good players out there, what LFC are doing is making sure that they get them in at the right price. No more over paying in the market which is admirable. I can see how FSG are trying to run the club but in today’s game you cannot afford to get left behind. I hope somebody (Arda Turan) does come in before the window closes, if not, we’re looking at best a fight for 5th spot with Arsenal and Everton depending on what Arsenal get in.

  • Raam says:

Spurs agreed for £35m when initialy his price was £28 and later on we agreed for £30m. I am glad that LFC was not mad to agree for what Spurs paid. That fund can be usefull to bring better and proven goal scorers that we need. Forget about these mercenaries and lets move on. I would rather support players who come and want to bring us back to top than wasting my time supporting primadonas who think they are too good and only want to play CL football.

  • Paul says:

    Sign damiao… Borrini +money= lamela…

  • REDDY says:

I say we take the £35mil and buy Erriksen(15m)-Bernard(18m)… And I say swap Suarez to Real Madrid for Benzema and Di Maria. Goals: Erriksen(10)-Bernard(10)-Benzema(20+)- Di Maria(15) = 55 goals!!! There is life after Suarez people… If only Rogers was a brave man lol! But if Suarez stays I think we should sign either Di Maria/Juan Mata/Jackson Martinez

    • Jimmy Areabi (Editor) says:

Bernard joined Shakhtar (replacing their Mkhitaryan-shaped hole) about 2 weeks ago.

  • Raam says:

LFC Nigeria, Spurs are not in UCL. If not mistaken its Europa League but players willing to go there. Very simple, they are willing to pay obscene amount of salary. But at the same time Spurs have to qualify for UCL and if they fail to do so than these so call marquee signings will show their true colours.

  • jack says:

With idiot owners who care nothing for our club .what did you expect ? This is the way it will always be until the sc*mmy yanks are gone
