Dr Jekyll & Mr Costa: Is Diego Suarez’s Partner or Replacement

Liverpool targetTHE Liverpool Echo have reported that Liverpool FC had bid £21.8 million for Diego Costa’s services – the offer is believed to have triggered his release clause.

The 6ft 2” forward started his career with Barcelona Esportivo Capela being limited to street football until the age of 16.

He signed for SC Braga in 2006 and was loaned to Futebol Clube Penafiel in the second division eventually he was sold to Atlético Madrid for €1.5 million but stayed on loan at Braga for the rest of the season in 2007. He also had spells on loan at Celta Vigo and Albecete.

Costa was sold to Real Valladolid in 2009 as part of the deal that sent goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo in the opposite direction, with the transfer including a buy-back option that could be activated by Atlético at the end of the season. He started strong for the Castile and León side, scoring six times in his first 12 games but could not stop Valladolid getting relegated at the end of the campaign.

2010 saw Diego return to the Los Rojiblancos (the red and whites) but was loaned again to Rayo Vallecano. When he returned for 2012-2013 season all guns blazing he scored 10 goals, 12 assists in 31 matches mostly as a winger to accommodate Falcao. He added 8 more goals in the Copa del Rey campaign as Atletico lifted the cup, and 2 in the Europa League. (A total of 20 goals in 44 games)

At the Vicente Calderón, Costa thrived under the management of Diego Simeone, who is as much of a nuisance on the touchline as he was on the pitch. The same can’t be said for Rodgers.

Costa is regarded as one of the Primera Liga’s “finest wind-up merchants” and Spanish newspaper Marca once aptly labelled him “Dr Jekyll and Mr Costa”.

Diego does have temperament issues he received 11 yellow cards last season and his known for his on the pitch antics. Headbutting springs to mind.

Could we as a football club be able to handle another ‘hot head’?

Spanish Journalist Sid Lowe wrote once, Costa treats “football as love and war – a territory where all is fair.”

What would Costa add to Liverpool, and do we really need him?

He is terrific with his head, half of his La Liga goals were headers. He is also extraordinarily strong and a good dribbler of the ball. We all know that Rodgers wants his attacking options to be fluid and be able to interchange positionally and the beauty of Diego Costa is that he can play anywhere along the front line.

One interesting tweet I come across today via @basstunedtored

“Shots required for the last 34 goals, Luis Suarez 315 (10.8% conversion) Diego Costa 175 (17.4% conversion) #LFC efficiency upgrade?”

The Brazilian is a very talented player one who knows how to frustrate opposing teams and their fans but he would offer more fire and fear to our attack. In 219 career appearances he has scored 65 goals and has won the UEFA Super Cup and the 2012/2013 Copa del Rey, he scored the equaliser against Real Madrid in the final.

The question is though is Diego ‘The Panther’ Costa, Suarez’s partner or replacement? Only time will tell.

From what suarez is saying he deffo wants out (big mistake) but I would not sell to arsenal. I would swap him for diego costa plus 20 to 30 million they have cash, they sold falcao fo 50 million, and they are in the champions league! As for arsenal they are in champions league this year but next year they will be in the europa ,top 4 this year liverpool, man utd ,man city, chelsea, so if suarez went to arsenal would he be moving again when arsenal fail to get in champions league next year!

They are strikers who are brought in to score goals!!!! So really, does it matter whether replacemt or partner?

  • Jenas says:

    Partner

  • Lawrence says:

replacement or partner, it’s good that we are trying to move in early before something happens to suarez, if all of u remember a certain Carroll

  • stevie says:

At 21m he is clearly over priced and his goals per game is distinctly average. It would be a mistake to buy this bloke as he isn’t good enough for that price

    • Geoff says:

I agree . He also has had injury and discipline problems as well . For 21 million we could surely do better

  • bobby says:

to me i see him as a partner it wil mak sense

  • Geoff says:

He is obviously the replacement . Nobody can believe a word Ayre or Rodgers say . They never tell the truth

Just like mignolet for reina. Ayre is trying to get Costa so Suarez can be sold

    • stevie says:

Think you’re right. Costa for suarez. Just isn’t good enough. You can get darren bent for 5m and he would be just as effective and score more goals

  • allaboutanfield says:

It looks to me that Costa could be a replacement for Suarez. As the days count down , Suarez appears to be edging towards the exit. This man wants to play in the Champions League that is for sure. Where he end up most likely he won’t be in England. My gut feeling is that he might be going to Real Madrid. Seriously I don’t believe in what the Liverpool management has been saying. They say one thing and do another thing. Iwould rather look at their actions.

  • Erin says:

Replacement , that much is simple. Suarez will go. When he does, we can spend the rest of the fee on midfielder, winger maybe another defender. We will be better off for it as well.
