Suarez proves football is just a lie

Liverpool Uruguay‘Football is a lie’ – Rafael Benitez

LIVERPOOL’S former manager has come up with some interesting quotes down the years.

Priests on mountains of sugar, white liquid in bottles etc but his notion that the beautiful game is fictitious might just be his best. It certainly rings true during these arduous summer breaks. These hot, tedious months where the focus shifts from the football pitch to Jim White, agents and Twitter.

No doubt everyone has seen Luis Suarez’s interview with Sid Lowe by now. In it, the want away striker essentially laid his cards on the table for all to see, inviting criticism and scorn in doing so. In isolation this interview makes little difference, but as Benitez’s quote suggests, in football perception means more than reality.

The Uruguayan has more or less begged Liverpool to release his shackles and allow him to scamper down to London to fulfil his dreams. It’s angered Liverpool fans, naturally. It’s given hope to Arsenal fans. But what else has it done? Precious little.

What he said to Sid Lowe he will have undoubtedly said to Brendan Rodgers and Ian Ayre already. For every ‘extraordinary’ interview like this one, you must look past the headline grabbing quotes and try to discern what the reality of the situation is.

People seem keen to push the notion that because Suarez has publicly slammed Liverpool and revealed his intention to vacate the north west that there has been some seismic shift in the landscape of this transfer fiasco. There hasn’t been. What this interview shows is desperation.

Early in the summer Suarez made passes at Real Madrid as regularly as he sipped mate from his omnipresent flask. Unfortunately for Suarez, as things stand Madrid have their eyes locked on a more attractive target and are paying him little attention.

If Suarez wants to leave Liverpool this summer then right now his only option is to move to a team who are not yet guaranteed Champions League football and whose potential for winning that competition or the Premier League are remote at best.

He has cited his desire for Champions League football as his motivating factor for wanting to leave Liverpool and says people should accept this. The truth is, Liverpool’s supporters do accept this. They yearn for the same thing.

Had Madrid rocked up and tabled an acceptable bid for the player, fans would have waved him off with regret but also understanding. The problem is that Arsenal, while not a local rival as Suarez correctly points out in his interview, are the team that Liverpool must catch this season and their offer undersells Suarez by a long way in today’s ridiculous market.
[ad_pod id=”unruly-video” align=”center”]
So why now? Why alienate the supporters who, as recently as this weekend, still had his back and chanted his name? Why threaten to take the club that have supported him so often to court? Why bring all this on himself? Again, we arrive back at desperation.

Arsenal’s farcical £40m plus £1 bid came a long time ago now. It was rejected out of hand by Liverpool. It isn’t Suarez’s value and that apart, it was downright antagonistic. Arsene Wenger wants this saga to be completed ‘amicably’ but it was that childish bid that started a war of words between the two clubs and probably strengthened Liverpool’s resolve to keep the player from the Gunners’ clutches.

If this transfer does end up in a court, one wonders what would be made of Arsenal’s extraordinarily specific bid. But I digress, back to Suarez. He claims he has a £40m release clause. He claims to have the PFA’s backing. He claims that he will hand in a transfer request. Once more, football is a lie.

Either that clause is fictional or his ‘super agent’ Pere Guardiola is, well, a little bit silly. If that clause is set in stone then Liverpool had no right to reject Arsenal’s bid. Guardiola, being a ‘super agent’ and all that jazz, presumably would know this. He’d have threatened Liverpool with legal action the moment he got wind of that offer being rejected. Liverpool insist no such clause exists and reading between the lines, it seems they are correct. If they weren’t then this transfer would have either been completed or would be being played out in a court room by now.

Suarez and Guardiola are obviously frustrated with Liverpool’s resistance to the transfer (though, not frustrated enough to wave a ‘loyalty’ bonus by submitting a transfer request just yet) and making the player’s position at Liverpool untenable by burning his bridges on the pages of the Guardian newspaper seems like a desperate roll of the dice to apply additional pressure to FSG and Liverpool Football Club. Moaning, whining and telling the world how you are a slave to a club that have gone back on their word are not the actions of people in control of a situation like this.

Assuming no clause exists then Suarez can conduct as many Twitter crashing interviews as he wants but his situation changes little. Liverpool value the player in excess of £50m and don’t want to sell him to the team they have in their crosshairs. Stalemate.

If FSG stick to their plan and refuse to send Suarez down south then Suarez must hope that a team from abroad make a bid for his services or prepare his next move. That would be threatening to strike, ala Carlos Tevez. To do that in World Cup year, aged 26 would take some real bottle and stupidity but nothing can be ruled out.

Words mean little anymore. Football is just a lie.

War of words? All the hiss booing has been coming from Liverpool, all the talk about Arsenal’s bids has been coming from Liverpool.

Arsenal made two bids, Liverpool could have just said no thanks, we ain’t selling and that’s that which they haven’t, instead Rogers has said it would take well over £50 because of Cavani, then compared Suarez to Bale’s value which is double that. Should have just said we ain’t selling at any price so just bugger off, which they didn’t obviously in the hope Real might come in with a larger bid.

Instead you got Henry making snide remarks on Twitter at Arsenal, Rogers Saying Arsenal lack class and various other bits.

Arsenal have said what exactly? they make a few bids and that’s pretty much been it with Wenger generally declining to talk about any bids.

Just seems Liverpool’s over reaction to bids for one of their players shows their insecurity in the fact that they’re not really going to be able to hold onto Suarez. They should have just said from the bat “under no circumstances will he be sold whatsoever” but Rogers seems to say a different thing every day.

    • darren says:

      what utter bollocks

    • Megamoses says:

      You are absolutely right man!

    • neutral says:

one thing you must understand is that rodgers is not the only one involve in making decisions for liverpoolfc.
Suarez cant intimidated liverpool by making an interview, Lfc is not stupid enough to ignore a clause, And if infact there is one, it must have a loop hole in it..

    • Greg says:

I think LFC have simply made it clear that the bids they’ve received are nowhere near the correct value, especially when you compare them to the Cavani and Bale. Henry made a mildly humorous comment, so who is over reacting here? Get over it. Meanwhile, BR didn’t say Arsenal lack class as you claim…if you read his actual comments, instead of just the headlines, he actually said he’d always regarded Arsenal as having class so was a bit surprised by the plus one quid bid.
The two clubs are trying it seems to keep things relatively professional, albeit with a little of the usual niggle involved when one is trying to get another’s player on the cheap. The fact that Arsenal made such a specific bid was also probably also a little irksome you must admit, even if seen as sensible on AFC’s side, not only for the amount but as it revealed there must at least have been some collusion with Suarez’s camp.
As it turns out the clause isn’t what they were led to believe it is, and Gordon Taylor has now basically confirmed LFC’s interpretation, and so AFC have had to go into “standby” mode. Suarez is now saying he wants an amicable solution too… after his words this week he may find he’s played that one wrong as well.

      • Erin says:

Spot on. I’d like to add, the price for a top striker/world class is 50 million plus. See Cavani, hulk, Neymar, Falcao, Torres and the rest. Rooney commands a fee in excess if 30 million, unwilling to move abroad (so you can recoup some of the fee), and his wages of 250k a week means you add 10 million plus each year to the price.
In my opinion, around 45 million BUT, a sell on fee of 40 % would be appropriate . Meaning LFC gets another 20 million plus once arsenal sell him 😉

      • Jocky Scott says:

I suppose the difficulty with Arsenal believing the bid has to be over £40m is what number between £40m and £41m doesn’t look like a strange figure for them to have bid?

£40.25m? £40.5m? £40.75m? They’re all strange amounts to me. Should Arsenal or any other club really bid an addtional half million or million or whatever over the figure they think will trigger a clause, just so it doesn’t look like a strange amount?

    • King says:

If you read the article properly and if you add research, and i do mean unbiased research and a bit of backbone, you’d realize that Arsenal ain’t much of a goody two shoes either.

Why do i say that? Well, firstly how did Wenger know of the so called notorious ‘buy-out/discussion clause’ to the exact digit? How was it known, making Arsenal bid an extra 1 pound?

Answer: Agent Guardiola told Arsenal, which equals to tapping up contract information.

Meaning: if this were brought to court, Arsenal is in a sh*t storm and could possibly be banned from making any transfers, now and in January.

So before getting on the headless, idiotic bandwagon, pointing the finger to only Liverpool and its components, blame also your silly, class-less club. Majority of you fans were pissed RvP left, not only to your biggest rival but for peanuts too. Calling for heads and accusing RvP of being a traitor when he is as Suarez is now. Stop being sissies and admit that at least Liverpool are taking charge of the situation, as bleak as it would turn out to be.

Oh and don’t worry about future quality players, not interested in joining Liverpool, for handling the situation as it is. Worry more about your own club and let us worry about ours. Comprende, pendejo?

      • Boglin says:

Umm weren’t Liverpool apologising publicly for tapping up Clint Dempsey at Fulham not so long ago, he didn’t even end up at Liverpool but no way could stay at Fulham as a direct result of Liverpools actions.

Never said Arsenal were goody two shoes, think over the grand scheme of things the way most clubs behave is pretty crap but that makes it all the more entertaining. Wasn’t talking about behaviour through the ages just in this instance and if anything it was the whiny article that struck a nerve with me and Brendan Rogers, something I just find annoying about him, probably the fact he wont shut up.

Luis Suarez’ supposed clause had been reported in a couple of media outlets before Arsenal’s bid, information most probably given by his agent. Arsenal could probably point to those though a the source of blame, I know I would regardless of the truth.

I’m not on a bandwagon, not even an Arsenal supporter, I like Arsenal and Liverpool equally as teams that i’ll happily watch both with a positive vibe.

I was pointing out that Liverpool’s taking charge of the situation actually looks more like panic and weakness. Sometimes the less said the better but Brendan Rogers just can’t let a day go by without opening his mouth and harping on about some stupid crap.
        * “Luis is happy here”
” “I thought Arsenal had class”
        * “He’s not for sale”
        * “We’ll only consider offers upwards of blah blah”
        * Then he’s onto this whole club is about honour and other guff
        * “The fans love him he’s going nowhere”
        * “He’s training by himself in his underwear for a total lack of respect to the club”

Is this taking charge of the situation? looks like the guy holding a weak hand to me, all because a club made 2 bids.

        Should have just said
        * We received a bid, we ain’t selling, Luis thinks he has a clause he has been “fooled” I mean mistaken I have nothing else to say.

        • King says:

You don’t read too well, do you? If it were taken to court, mind me. But i stand corrected, with regards to the rest. Correct, he had other ways or scripts he should have used to contain the situation, that BR. But laddie, there are reasons to it, being:
          a) it shows character
          b) we might be mind-f*cking Arsenal before season even starts (BR’s got ya left nut, Wengie!)
          c) managers/coaches come in different sizes and packages *don’t see you coaching some A class football, wouldn’t have the time to troll on to a Liverpool site just FFS

so put on your safety panty, its gonna be bumpy

          babyy

          • Boglin says:

            A) Shows weak character
            B) Might be, might not be. Henry speaking up again recently to me says that he thinks a clear message needs to get out because a clear one is coming from Brendan Rogers.
            C) Managers do come in all sorts, just seems to me Liverpool could do alot better than Brendan Rogers. He should spend more time coaching than trolling Arsenal.

    • CHUKWUEMEKA says:

funny boglin, like ur comment but cant agree with it. assuming carzola wants to move (which we can guess he wld next year if afc doesnt deliver) nd he is worth 30-35mil but thinks he has a 10mil release clause if a team with history comes knocking nd lfc bids 10mil5pence for santi, how wld you react? doesnt it sound rediculous nd classless? sometimes we ve got to leave sentiments and welcome reality. am not against selling to arsenal at the right price but when afc pulled the 40mil+1 act, it honestly became a means of disregard and insult. as for henry snide twitter stuff, that shows he has got some scouse humour. he replied the emirate joke nd insult of a bid with a joke that sounds same.

    • guest says:

Completely agree, I am beginning to wonder if Brendan can even lay straight in bed?. Most fans just seem to ignore the fact that he tells lies on a constant basis.

  • AA says:

I’m an Arsenal fan and I thought I would have my say.

The bid Wenger made for Suarez was not childish or classless. All AW was trying to do is get Suarez for the cheapest price possible. If you walked into a car showroom and the guy said to you that you could a get a Hummer (or whatever car you want) as long as you offer over £1 million what would you do? I would offer the £1 and one penny if I could. The bid was made purely for business and was not an attempt to take the piss out of LFC.

While you guys want to catch us up in the race for CL football you guys are nowhere near us and are not really our rivals. Liverpool are behind spurs and Everton who are behind us. I hate to be blunt but Arsenal go into a season aiming to win the league but finish in the top four meanwhile Liverpool go into a season aiming to finish in the top four but finish mid-table. Even with Suarez in your team you guys would struggle to finish above Everton and not finish above Arsenal and Spurs.

I really do hope Liverpool and Arsenal can come to some sort of an agreement for Suarez. I think £45 million would be fair. If I was Brendan I would take the money get rid of Suarez and reinvest that money in two attacking players (another ST and a no.10/AM/winger.

Just like RVP was not bigger than Arsenal, Suarez is not bigger than Liverpool. I do not really want him at Arsenal but if I was LFC I would tell Suarez ‘fuck off then and don’t come back’.

    • King says:

I understand where your are coming from and most of your points I agree especially the last paragraph. Seems to me you clearly got the jist as to why Liverpool are holding Suarez for ransom.

If you got a direct line to Wenger, do tell him to bid at least 50mil ‘coz lower than that won’t even get you his fangs.

And as much as I love a good banter, Arsenal IS our direct rival, ain’t we gunning for the same 3 spots for CL? wait wait! don’t start with aiming for PL, you and i both know there’s a drought in our cabinets. Well, at least it is for one team. Wonder who it is.. hmmm…

Also I’d like to thank you for your input on buying 2 attacking players to replace Suarez or to better compliment the team. Arsenal have an excess of about 70mil, still don’t see Wenger spending a dime.

Good luck confirming your place in Champions League! That’s if Arsenal still wants Suarez after bidding for 50 or more!

    • guest says:

A great player and the reason we didn’t completely fail last season, some lfc fans seem to change their opinion over night or when the papers tell them too, most of the stuff printed has not even been said, but fickle brainless fans swallow it all up and regurgitate it back onto these boards. Brendan more than likely did promise Suarez a move, we had a crap season last year despite Suarez best efforts, no real signings that are worth writing home about, experienced players shunted out, the obsession with the wage bill, Maybe Suarez has ambition. I for one will be sad to see him go, I just wish the gaffer and owners would stop lying to us fans, and if they did have an agreement, then honour it, they had an agreement with Meireles which they would not honour, he left and we suffered.

  • Jocky Scott says:

Ha ha, another sanctimonious Liverpool-biased article. Maybe it was Liverpool FC that proved football was a lie when they tapped up Christian Ziege all those years ago?

    • Greg says:

More likely George Graham and his bungs a decade before…..what club was he manager of again?

      • Jocky Scott says:

It is true that all clubs do it, although in this case Arsenal just seem to have made two official bids and that is it.

I’m not an Arsenal fan by the way, I just find it funny how self-righteous Liverpool are being about the whole thing.

If I were an Arsenal fan I certainly wouldn’t Suarez signing for my club. He’s a good player but also an utter scumbag.

        • CHUKWUEMEKA says:

who are you nd which team do you support.

          • Jocky Scott says:

Obviously not going to tell you who I am, but I support my local team who play in the Southern League Divison One (Central).

It’s poor level of football but I have a real good laugh going to the matches with my mates. Also, gives a good perspective on how much BS is spouted about the Premier League teams and players by their fans and the whole Sky-lead propoganda machine.

Players come and go, just get over it when it is one of yours who wants to leave.

It is only a game after all.

  • hydee says:

u got it right to d wire boglin.brendan just seems to be tryn to hard to convience d lad that lfc is d best place to be.u can’t blame to the lad for being abitious, although i wouldn’t expect him not to do the same to us wen we go trophyless again next year.but am really getting sick of hearing lfc fans, brendan nd ex-players alike calling us classless…..i could as well put lfc in d tthmhotspurds bracket

  • Stroller says:

‘War of words’ ? Words have been only coming one way and that’s not from Arsenal. Goody-goody Liverpool – that’s the owner, Brendan Rogers and their band of acolyte old players have all been put on-message to rubbish Arsenal at every opportunity. The crime apparently was not to start bidding at £50 million, which Liverpool would have rejected anyway, with the same charge of lacking class.

Every denial that they don’t want to sell is coupled with a new figure of his price. How classy is that? Either say they’re not selling at any price, or start negotiating. Pity that Rogers wasn’t around at Anfield in 89 when a classless club gave out flowers to fans following the Hiillsborough disaster, and a classy Liverpool forward who refused a handshake at the end.

  • John Oats says:

    1. Suarez wants away from Liverpool
    2. Arsenal made a bid, then another, based on information they received about a £40m clause. That’s it. Wenger then repeats over and over again that it will be between Liverpool and Suarez. Nothing more is said.
    3. Liverpool (the club that actually are showing no class) first joke about what Arsenal are smoking at the Emirates (Champions League cigars I think you’ll find Henry).
    4. Liverpool make it clear that Suarez is not for sale at any price……………..apart from the valuation of £50m and then £55……………………..but we don’t want to sell him at any price…………………..well maybe £80m because Bale is reported to be worth £80m and Suarez is the same quality! Please Real Madrid put a bid in so we don’t have to sell him to Arsenal………PLEASE!!! £40m…£45m anything you like. Better still, give us £20 plus Benzema! (Benzema won’t mind leaving Madrid for a mid-table team with no future and no Champions League will he). Sorted!
    5. Rodgers (the only sort of manager Liverpool can get these days after they sacked Benitez. Still, that loser did nothing for Liverpool…well apart from the Champions League trophy…..anyway since he left he has done nothing….well apart from winning the Europa League managing Chelsea and now manages Napoli), bleats about lack of class on the part of Arsenal, who have said nothing and acted in good faith putting in two bids…………..as happens to most clubs at this time of the year.
    6. Thompson and other deluded brain-deads have described Arsenal as a sideways step, and that Liverpool will be in the Champions League before Arsenal……..except that Arsenal are in it now, and Liverpool are not in Europe at all………………..but we will skip over that bit eh Tommo!
    7. Most Arsenal fans are not that bothered about Suarez, they like the idea of a top player in his prime arriving but don’t like the idea of all the baggage, and more potential bans. Its win win at the Emirates. If Arsenal land him he will likely play out of his skin and score 30 goals. If they don’t land him, Arsenal fans will have a good laugh next season watching a prisoner playing football for his prison.

Can’t be bothered any more…….besides 7 is a high enough number for many scousers to count up to.

    • Greg says:

…you sound like you need a cuddle.

    • no sheep says:

arsenal have done noting wrong? is that some sort of joke?

arsenal bid £40,000,001. do you not think that is a strange bid?
where did they get this number from?
pretty obvious that someone informed them of a clause a in suarez contract,
a contract that will have a confidentiality agreement in it.
arsenal will be very lucky not to be reported for tapping buy liverpool, if liverpool sell suarez for less then the price they want or dont manage to sell at all, i believe they will report arsenal for using underhanded tactic’s. using information that they received illegally.

    • CHUKWUEMEKA says:

“watching a prisoner playing football for his prison” isnt that what city the league? (tevez) you seem to have a short memory.

  • Jo dan says:

I wonder the arsenal fans making stupid comment here.well you are classless as the club you support. What nonsence is 4o,ooo,oo1?And you have the epitus to call BR names

    • peter says:

So Arsenal thought that ANY BID OVER 40M would trigger a release.

Obviously this isnt the case but arsenal believed it to be true at the time.

What do you think they should have bid?

41 million? So basically GIVE liverpool a million pound for nothing?

  • Johnny boy says:

This article is a joke, there have been no war of words between the 2 clubs jst brenda and mr.smoke throwing words here and there. First they say he’s not 4 sale, then they want 55mil, then 80mil, i mean they cant make their minds up. The way i c it is liverfools making a nuisence of themselves.

  • Tomas says:

Spot on , about the ridiculous bid of 40 million and 1 pound. I’m a die- hard Arsenal fan , but when I heard about it I thought it was a publicity stunt. No responsible , serious CEO would submit a bid like that for a player that a parent club doesn’t want to sell to begin with. But then it all makes perfect sense, doesn’t it. It’s not like Wenger or Gazidis have any experience in dealings at this lofty financial levels transfer wise. I wouldn’t be surprise if that stupid stunt doesn’t end up costing Arsenal extra 5 million or so, if they really want Suarez.

    • peter says:

So if the clause was there, youd have bid what? 45 million? 41 million? Either way youre giving away money!

Arsenal thought the clause was there and tried to meet it!

      • Tomas says:

Apparently it wasn’t there, was it. Please tell me how we can see this as anything other than another Wenger/Gazidis TW *. Strangely , no other club has been interested in acquiring Suarez , surely it couldn’t be all down to his disciplinary record, could it. Perhaps other clubs new something about his release clause( or lack there of)

  • peter says:

As everyone else has said, all the public comments have been from liverpool. Liverpool have made derogatory comments about Arsenal and Arsenal havent responded so there is no “war of words”

Im not sure why everyone is upset at the plus 1 pound bid.

If you beleive the trigger to be anything over 40 million you bid as little as possible? Why would Arsenal throw in any more money than they thought was needed?

    • Greg says:

You’re right, there’s no “war of words”. LFC have simply rebuffed what they see as bids seriously undervaluing their player. Neither do I see the Arsenal plus a quid bid as “childish” … why would they bid any more than what they thought necessary? They were wrong though in thinking it would “spring” Suarez and were obviously misinformed by his camp. They’ve now stepped back a little and until they make a more acceptable bid that’s where they’ll stay. The problem here is Suarez not the clubs.

  • Naveed says:

    Suarez stays lfc lose
    Suarez goes lfc lose

  • darren says:

so here it is whilshire wants to go to liverpool, liverpool offer his buyout plus one pound do you sell?

    • Boglin says:

If Wilshere had a buyout clause why would you even offer over a pound? i’d expect that if you wanted him you’d pay exactly the clause price.

It being a buyout clause then I wouldn’t be able to stop you and wouldn’t be upto me if he goes since a buyout clause means if you pay the clause then I have to sell him.

Note to LFC fans, Don’t use the online comments section of THE ECHO to leave a truthful or insightful comment, as since they wrecked it for most fans by trying to force us to join corrupt facebook, it is now just being used by the club to shape opinion of the owners, any critical comments are blocked, critical commentators are banned. Go and check out the latest article regarding Suarez, and what our stay away owner says, and notice how every comment is ridiculously and laughably over the top in their praise of Henry. How insecure are these sad t**ts that they have to control the fans thought process, Propaganda is what yanks do best, ask the Nazi’s they housed during Paperclip, they will tell you lol.

So I’m an arsenal fan dat just happened to stumble on this blog and I can boldly say dat I understand what you all are feeling.. I could care less if arsenal bid more for suarez or not, we all know he won’t be sold..but y’all should understand here dat dis is real life..itz a b***h and its not just fair.. Arsenal have been robbed countless times..from ashley cole to adebayor to nasri, clichy, and van judas…but at the end of the day do you blame dese players?? Van persie could have had a statue with him on a stretcher to best explain his stay in arsenal but we all stood by him..if he was in a team like madrid or barca or man shitty he would probably have remained stagnant..then his only season he’s injury free, he scores a lot and feels dat’s enough pay to arsenal for standing by him for years unending…so wat is my point exactly: I don’t blame dese players because dey had a bigger picture in mind and a club that makes chamak as their major summer acquisition just wasn’t helping dem realize dat dream…so dey all moved on.. Let’s all be candid now and forget wat club we support..but do you think signing aspas, kolo toure and d alberto guy can convince a player of suarez’s calibre (who you all have agreed is worth over £50m) that the club are ready to make a push for d CL?? I know arsenal is not a team dat can boast of d best players but we can say to an extent dat our coach kinda knows wat he is doing (kinda)…. The days where players like Gerrard, Totti, Di Natali will stay in a club not bcoz of money or trophies but because of the love they have for d fans and d club itself are long gone…just look at rooney and dat’ll explain it all…. So y’all shuldnt blame arsenal for any foul business.. We’re only doing what others have done to us and believe ?e wen you want to challenge for big things, scenarios like dis must show up and I can bet dat liverpool will do similar business in d foreseeable future.. So my fellow soccer fans I have just one thing to say… One player can neva make a club.. You got over torres very well… And I respect liverpool for one thing..the fans and dat electric anfield atmosphere… Although I’ve only watched it on tv as my country is miles away from merseyside, itz an experience I promised I must have… And you all have shown Him all the love but he still isn’t happy..my candid opinion is dat you all look for a way to dispose of him.. After one or two seasons with arsenal, madrid will come knocking and he’ll act in a similar way which is why I care less if arsenal sign or don’t sign…
