damien comolli and andy carrollFORMER Liverpool FC Director of Football Damien Comolli has said that the £35 million fee the Reds paid out for Andy Carroll was a risk worth taking, according to The Daily Mirror.

Comolli was talking about his spells as Director of Football at both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur. Both spells ended with Comolli getting sacked but he is still happy with the job he did at Anfield.

He cites the fact that the Reds had recently sold Fernando Torres for an inflated fee and also off-loaded Dutch winger Ryan Babel as the reason behind the ill-fated deal for the Geordie front man, saying:

“When we talk about pressure, blame should be on the clubs not on the player. At Liverpool, and I would include myself in this because I was there, you have to manage expectations. But I would not say that has anything to do with Andy Carroll’s fee.

“There was an inflated price on Fernando Torres and we got unbelievable money for him. We looked at it not as a two-player deal, but as a four-player deal.

“We also sold Ryan Babel at that time and we signed Luis Suarez, and we made a profit. That is the way we looked at it at the time.

“I said we were overpaying by £15m for Carroll, but that if the player is not successful we will still get £20m back on him. And since then Liverpool have had a big loan fee from West Ham – they paid his wages for a year, and Liverpool have now sold him permanently to them.

“People have forgotten that and they shouldn’t.”

Whether Liverpool fans will want to be reminded of that particular deal remains to be seen.

Hope he doesn’t ever land at John Lenon again. However, it was not his fault entirely.

This january maybe the right times for LFC ship out the players who truely doesn’t want to stay with LFC again. Hopefully LFC can sell Skrtel over than 15 milion pound fee to add more budget to get new replacement players. I would like if LFC can get Kryiakos Papadoulos. He is versatile player who can operate anywhere team needed. He also can make assist and score the goal.He is Amazing player, please do not miss him again to anothers clubs. After get Papadoulos,LFC can consider to strengthen foward areas. And next summer LFC maybe no need to draw big budget for revamp the team again.

With sufficient depth in our defense, I don’t think we’ll be moving for a cb during January.already have a solid, proven defender (agger),an experienced one(kolo),and two young exciting prospects (sakho, pylori) plus wisdom and Kelly that can play that role.I agree that Papadopoulos is a masterclass defender but don’t forget he is suffering from a serious injury for some time now, making it a risky move.I don’t think fsg would like to gamble anymore with such a fee demanded, let alone the fact that now cb doesn’t seem a position we suffer.and skrtel might prove himself useful in matches that we need to play deep in defense(e.g. Against Manu).

  • Shanklys_sons says:

He clearly forgets the 20m spent on Downing and the OTT spenditure on Henderson.

When we should have been going for the likes of Mata, Turan or Diame who went on the cheap we clearly targeted flops.

  • Raam says:

He skillfully diverted Dalglish’s attention from top targets that eventualy went on cheap to other clubs. Made Liverpool buy some ‘below average’English players. Maybe that was his plan so that Liverpool will fail and Londoners prevail.
