Flanagan eyes first team role

John-Flanagan LiverpoolLIVERPOOL FC’s young defender Jon Flanagan has his eyes on Glen Johnson’s position as the first choice right back at Anfield according to Sky Sports.

Local lad Flanagan made his debut for the Reds in a comfortable 3-0 home win against Manchester City back in April 2011. Flanagan’s then manager Kenny Dalglish spoke about Flanno after the game, saying:

“The young boy is not bad. For us that is really encouraging as well because it is a reflection of the work that is being done at the academy and if we have a strong academy it can only benefit us for years to come.”

For Flanagan, who grew up only a few hundred yards away from Anfield it was a dream come true.

Since Dalglish left as manager, Flanagan’s progress has stalled. He has had loan spells away from the club and had injuries. Andre Wisdom has come into the team and would now appear to be manager Brendan Rodgers’ second choice right-back.

Flanno, as he is known, knows he needs to be playing games:

“I need to play first team football,” he said. “I need to be playing regularly so I’d take the chance to get out on loan. Playing for Liverpool again is my biggest target but if it doesn’t happen I think I need to get out on loan and show people what I can do.”

With the loan window about to open for all Football League teams there is the chance for Jon to go out and get some first team football under his belt, however with Glen Johnson being ruled out for up to 10 weeks, there is the chance that Flanno could see action at Anfield rather then further afield.

Not a hope, Wisdom, Kelly, McLaughlin, Skyrtl, all ahead of him IMO, not to mention Toure can play anywhere between the back 4 and Halfway line.

  • Andy says:

Not a chance! I can’t see how Wisdom gets ahead of Kelly IMO let alone Flanagan

  • Denis D says:

No way, Flannagan is pony and should be shipped out of club in January with the other 2 dead wood players we still have on the clubs books ( Borini, Jones)

I am glad to see that most of the dead wood players we had at club were shipped Or Loaned out: Assaidi, Borini, Carroll, Downing, Pacheco and Spearing.

Now Flannagan and B Jones are the only two still currently at the club simply not good enough to warrant being there.

Hopefully Whether in January or the summer: Assaidi, Borini are shipped out permanently and so is B Jones and J Flannagan are permanently shown the door in January or the summer.

How can a bright young lad like Flanagan a dead wood, thats ridiculous. That yound has a future in LFC. He just needs playing time and experience which might be the perfect reason for him to go out on loan.

  • Allweather says:

He is still young and need to play regular foot ball he will be better just look at the likes of thom ice at blackpool.

“Playing for Liverpool again is my biggest target but if it doesn’t happen I think I need to get out on loan and show people what I can do… which isn’t very much, of course.”

I wonda hw people think, how can you ever refer to john flanagan as deadwood???….you wise so?

  • Jim says:

If his dad wasn’t Carragher’s business partner, Dalglish’s mate ect , he’d be at Tranmere

  • charlie says:

agree with Jim that Dalglish favoured him as a result of connections with his Dad, that said he didn’t do badly and shouldn’t be written off just yet.

Kelly is clearly first choice as replacement for Johnson – there was even talk of him replacing Johnson before he got injured. He has pace and power and looks a more natural RB than Wisdom, despite the fact they are both naturally CBs.

Which ever way you look at it the loss of Johnson is a big blow.
