LIVERPOOL FC manager Brendan Rodgers has spoken of his delight that young wide player Raheem Sterling has been called up to the full England squad ahead of the national team’s upcoming double header against Moldova and Ukraine, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Reds boss Rodgers has told England manager Roy Hodgson that Sterling is ready to deliver for England in the games against Moldova at Wembley and then away to Ukraine.
Although Sterling has been used mainly as a substitute this season, Rodgers has seen enough in training and in the game time he has had, to predict that Sterling could make the difference for England.
Rodgers was quoted as saying:
“Raheem has looked very bright and very sharp for us. He took his goal against Notts County last week exceptionally well.
“He worked very hard to overcome the thigh injury which forced him to miss the closing months of last season and enjoyed a good pre-season.
“This is a young player who for six months last season was one of the top performers in the Premier League, not just for Liverpool. He has shown he’s capable of being here and playing at the top level. For us it’s just about taking the pressure away from him.
“Now he has to demonstrate that ability on a daily basis and when he gets opportunities in games he needs to consistently perform. If he does that then he will have a really bright future.”
Liverpool will hope that if Sterling is used by England, he returns injury free and ready for the next game away at Swansea.
