Liverpool FCACCORDING to The Metro, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that letting former Liverpool number one goalkeeper Pepe Reina go out on loan to Serie A side Napoli, was the correct move to make – and is confident that it is in the best interest for the club.

A number of Liverpool fans were surprised, and disappointed, to learn of the exit of Reina, who arrived from Villarreal in 2006, to Napoli in a move which reunited the 31 year old with former Reds’ boss Rafa Benitez.

And, despite leading Liverpool to the top of the table in the initial stages of this Premiership campaigns with a four game unbeaten streak, Rodgers was criticised for his decision to play four centre-backs in Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton – a defeat that ended their unbeaten start to the season.

Rodgers, however, has shrugged off the critics and insists that he will continue to make decisions he feels are in the club’s best interest, claiming his primary concern is the long-term future of the team.

Speaking earlier this week the Northern Irishman said:

“I know I can sleep at night knowing I will do the very best for the supporters and the club.

“Sometimes, especially at the beginning of something which is delicate and difficult, you’ll make decisions which, maybe are unpopular.

“But I want to be the one who steers the club back in the direction it should be going in and that is not easy.

“I know I am making decisions in the best interests of the club and that will always be the case.

“It has never been easy for them (fans) I’ve had to make decisions that were probably unpopular for players to go and I had to adjust the finances of the club as well.

“There was a difficult period at the beginning but we have grown and become better and better and I have great confidence in the coming months and years we can push on with that development.”

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.
