RodgersBRENDAN Rodgers, talking to the club’s official websiteis taking away the positives from the newest list of injuries that his side have suffered, insisting that the absence of the players is an opportunity for other squad members to shine.

Daniel Agger was missing from the squad on Monday in the Reds’ 2-2 draw with Swansea City, whilst Philippe Coutinho now requires a shoulder operation after a tangle with Swans’ defender Ashley Williams at the Liberty Stadium.

The duos injuries mean their names have been added to the list of injured players already this season; with Kolo Toure, Aly Cissokho, Joe Allen, Sebastian Coates and Glen Johnson also been sidelined. However, despite this, Rodgers was in a boisterous mood and has urged any possible replacements to the absentees to step up and give all they’ve got.

Speaking at his pre-match conference before his side face Southampton, Rodgers said:

“You can’t forecast the injuries and obviously they have been unfortunate, young Coutinho will have to take a bit of time out. But it will open the door for someone else and they have to come in and perform.

“Martin Skrtel had been out of the team for a long time but retained his commitment to the cause and retained his quality in training every day so that he was ready to come back in.

“I said at the beginning of the season: I need every single one of them – not just 11 – we need everybody. You just need to continue to be professional, so that when you are asked to come in, you are ready. And if you come in and you get the shirt, you do well.”

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.

a tangle with Swans’ defender Ashley Williams, you’re joking? It was a full on assault, Williams should have been sent off. But as usual the officials give nothing to us.

correct. williams knew what he was doing and the possible consequences of his actions. cowardly assault but he helped get his side a point so probably couldn’t care less about coutinho. job done as far as he is concerned. glad we didn’t sign him in the summer

Hopefully this means BR is able to look at someone other than Sterling and Wisdom. Ibe is streets ahead of Sterling and Wisdom is just nt ready. 2-1 up against Swansea,Coutinho off and our midfield gets over run.Swansea playing keep ball and carving us open at will. What to do ? Bring on Sterling ? Can’t hold a ball, can’t defend so y bring him on in such a situation. Poor Lucas at the moment is covering and having to tackle for Hendo,Gerard and Coutinho. Wisdom ? Defends the wrong side of a player, no tactical ability , gives the ball away at every opportunity and breaks our momentum when we go forward. Despite all this we top of the log.Reality though is that without Coutinho we lack creativity. Aspas needs to be deployed as a winger – more time to receive the ball and run at defenders. Missing out on Ericksen and Mykhi was a huge loss for us – no cover for Lucas and no one to come on and strengthen our midfield. Wisdom – not ready , Sterling – not ready ,Gerard – anonymous at the moment – flashes of brilliance and then tends to drift out of games – our captain fantastic has got to be more influential in our games – not all doom and gloom as for the 1st time in years (has managed to get our team to play as a unit and for each other – whether will power alone will get us back where we belong – nt so sure – hopefully come Jan we sitting pretty and can get a good defensive mid to really push on
