Jonjo-Shelvey-SwanseaIN an interview given prior to facing Liverpool FC for the first time since leaving, Jonjo Shelvey has said he has no regrets over leaving Anfield reports BBC Sport.

Former Reds midfielder Jonjo Shelvey will play for Swansea City tonight in their home game against Liverpool. It will be the first time Shelvey has come up against his former team-mates since his £5million move to the Liberty Stadium in the summer transfer window.

Shelvey has said that Reds boss Brendan Rodgers gave him the option to stay and fight for his place in the midfield but the young Englishman wanted regular first team football:

“I don’t regret leaving because I’d probably be on the bench [at Liverpool],” he said.

“It was a massive decision, but I feel that I’ve made the right choice in coming away.”

Lining up against Shelvey tonight will be LFC captain Steven Gerrard who will be making his 400th appearance as Skipper.

Shelvey admits it will be strange to line up with Gerrard in the opposition midfield, saying:

“He’s the best player I’ve ever played with, along with [Liverpool striker Luis] Suarez.

“He’s the most complete midfield player England’s seen, in my lifetime anyway, and he’s been first class with me.

“It will be difficult playing against him – I’m not going to lie, I can’t hide that.

“But you will only know how good you are when you go up against someone like that so I’m looking forward to it, but it will be a challenge.”

I think he was right to leave Liverpool, because he was never going to get enough game time to fulfill his potential but if we do well without him and he away from Anfield then we can always try and buy him back. I wish the lad luck – except for tonight!

Saw the game..and now i’m convinced why LFC chose to sell him. He has a split personality, one moment he can be brilliant up front and another moment can create disaster. Both our goals are from his mistakes. Anyway, congrats to D.Sturridge for his fourth goal from four games. What a start for Moses. I saw smoke coming out of J.Mourinho’s nostrills.
