LiverpoolFORMER Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has claimed in his new autobiography that, while he did attempt to sign Steven Gerrard, the Reds captain is ‘not a top, top player,’ according to The Telegraph.

Ferguson claims that Brendan Rodgers’ side need at least eight players before even thinking of challenging for the Premiership title, and singled out Steven Gerrard, questioning his reputation as one of the world’s best midfielders.

Ferguson admits that, when it seemed inevitable that Gerrard would be leaving Anfield to another big name club, he was interested in bringing him to Old Trafford.

However, the 71 year old challenged the belief that the Liverpool and England skipper is a ‘top top player.’

Ferguson reflected on times when both Roy Keane and Paul Scholes were playing together against Liverpool, and claimed that Gerrard ‘seldom had a kick’ in these games.

He went on to claim that it was ‘absolute nonsense’ to compare both Gerrard and Chelsea midfielder, Frank Lampard, with former England international Scholes.

Gerrard notched his 100th Premiership goal last weekend in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Newcastle, and has scored 161 goals overall –  7 of those against Manchester United – as well as scoring 21 goals for the England national team, most recently in the Three Lions’ 2-0 win against Poland.

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.

No one fears him any more united players can now enjoy playing football, some for the first time in their lives, I say welcome to the real world you have lived in fear for so long! Ferguson can now live out his retirement bitter and twisted YOU ARE HISTORY! You will walk alone,
