Reds captain, Steven Gerrard, when talking to BBC Sport, has lauded manager Brendan Rodgers for showing the bravery to give the younger players an opportunity to hone their skills on the pitch.
Gerrard also claimed that the amount of foreign players that are currently in English football are hindering the progress of young players.
However, the 33 year old has praised Rodgers for allowing more youngsters, such as Raheem Sterling, Andre Wisdom and Jordan Ibe, into the team, labelling it ‘brave’.
“Managers are only ever 8 to 10 games away from the sack, so to take risks on unknown young players is difficult.
“There’s no two ways about it, it’s a lot more difficult to break through nowadays because of the standard of players and because there is a lot more foreigners about.”
Greg Dyke, new chairman of the Football Association, has echoed these concerns and plans to set up a new commission in order to resolve the dwindling number of English footballers in the Premier League.
The captain, himself an Academy graduate, believes that the Reds are taking the best possible steps to help nurture their young talent, which, as mentioned before, has resulted in players such as Wisdom and Sterling breaking into the first team.
“Brendan Rodgers has been fantastic at this club because he’s been brave and he’s given young players a chance,” he said.
Liverpool are currently second in the Premiership, on the back of a 3-1 victory over Sunderland on Sunday, they are two points behind leaders, Arsenal.
