ACCORDING to The Liverpool Echo, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has denied that he was offered the assistant manager position by Harry Redknapp if he were to become England manager – though he admits he would have considered the idea.
QPR manager, Redknapp, claimed in his autobiography that in 2012, with Redknapp odds-on favourite to be offered the position, he offered Rodgers the chance to become his assistant manager for Euro 2012, and that Rodgers gladly accepted the proposal.
However, Rodgers has played down this assertion, claiming it didn’t get to that stage.
Rodgers said:
“When I was manager at Swansea, Harry had asked me after the game, he pulled me aside and it was a unique conversation because he was obviously very confident – as was the nation – he was going to be offered the national team job.
“Here was a Premier League manager asking another Premier League manager to come and work with him at the European Championships. It was a quick conversation. I was aware he was very keen for me to team up with him if he was given the role.
“There was no decision either way. Out of the respect I have for Harry I was going to consider it.”
Given the Reds’ fantastic start to the Premiership, Liverpool fans will be thankful that this didn’t happen.
