gerrard-rodgers-LFCLiverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has told the Liverpool Echo that Reds captain, Steven Gerrard, is the best he has ever worked with.

Gerrard once again proved his worth in big games by netting England’s 2nd goal in their crucial World Cup qualifier against Poland to make it 2-0, and seal the Three Lions’ place in Brazil with a fantastic finish.

Rodgers described the 33 year old’s goal as ‘typical Gerrard,’ and the Northern Irishman said was a great reminder for fans that, despite being in the latter stages of his career, Gerrard still has something to offer to both club and country.

Speaking to the Echo, he said: “I was delighted for Steven, his role for England is so important and it gets extremely under-played a lot of the time.

“His leadership since he was appointed England captain and how he has marshalled that group through has been outstanding. He sets the example and his performance level has been incredible. I think sometimes because of the level he has set it sometimes gets taken for granted.

“People talk about him as this great captain but what people forget is that he’s still a world-class player. It’s something I’ve been fully aware of since I’ve been here. I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked with top world-class players at Chelsea and some brilliant technicians when I was at Swansea, but Steven is probably the best player that I’ve ever worked with.

“The quality he can play with when the tempo is really high in a game is incredible. He looks after himself so well and he’s so professional – he’s still got a number of years left in him yet to turn in great performances.

“He’s a respected figure and a wonderful example for the other players. He takes a real responsibility within the group and he doesn’t just think about himself. Liverpool and England have benefited from that.”

Gerrard head into Liverpool’s clash with Newcastle tomorrow on 99 Premiership goals, and will be hoping to reach yet another landmark in a fantastic career.

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.
