Image for Rodgers reveals incentive for Sunderland victory

Brendan-RodgersLIVERPOOL manager Brendan Rodgers has told the Reds to ‘dominate the situation’ as other results in the Premiership opened the gate for Liverpool to storm into second place in the table, according to theĀ club’s official website

With both Manchester United and Manchester City suffering defeats, and London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham having to share the points, there was a window of opportunity for Rodgers’ men, if they defeated Sunderland, to leapfrog a number of their potential top four contenders to second place.

Liverpool did not disappoint, with a brace from returning striker, Luis Suarez, and an almost inevitable goal from Daniel Sturridge earning the Reds a 3-1 victory over Kevin Ball’s side at the Stadium of Light.

Rodgers, speaking to the website, said:

“We stressed that before – that was an incentive going into the game.

“You have to look to dominate those situations if any of your rivals slip up. It’s the mark of a good team when you can go and put in a good performance and win.

“That’s what we’ve done; we’ve come here and won 3-1. Sunderland put a great effort into the game but our quality shone through in the end and it is three valuable points for us.”

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.
