No room in January for previous transfer errors

Liverpool signingsTHE moment that Liverpool looked to have lost the second of their almost impossible Christmas double-header against Chelsea came as Brendan Rodgers looked to his bench and considered which of his substitutes choose.

With Joe Allen having to be withdrawn through injury – further limiting the manager’s options going forward – he cast his eye over summer signings Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto and opted for 16 year old Brad Smith.

Many questioned why the manager would choose to bring on an untried 16 year old when there are two relatively established attacking options sitting on the bench and, at that time, what Liverpool needed was more options going forward in a game that Chelsea and their unattractively negative manager were attempting to close out.

Much ire was directed at Smith at the final whistle and, while he didn’t cover himself in glory, I suspect that the real frustration was intended for the man who had brought him onto the pitch. Because while Liverpool had once again suffered at the hands of a terrible, terrible, terribly biased referee, the manager’s initial team selection – and substitutions – cost Liverpool a possible point.

Many have been calling for Agger’s return in recent weeks (usually with baseless arguments, centering around the fact that they like Dan Agger more than Martin Skrtel because he has YNWA tattooed on his knuckles – rant over) but they probably hadn’t meant to bring him in at left-back and I, myself, was baffled at this decision.

I can thoroughly understand that Rodgers feels the need to give Agger game-time, or risk losing his vice captain, but surely the relatively easy (by comparison) run of games in January would be the prime-time for that, not starting the centre-back as a left-back in an already shaky back line?

Cissokho had a decent game filling in for Flanagan against Manchester City, and given he was on the bench, it is strange that Rodgers would choose Agger to take his place. Against Chelsea the whole defence was at sea in the first half, with the presence of a centre-back at left-back completely unbalancing the back four.

Johnson has just about reached the point where anybody is a preferred option so we really don’t need to go about making things more difficult.

The argument, of course, could be made for Johnson that without proper competition – particularly in light of Kelly’s persistent lack of fitness – he doesn’t feel the need to be at the top of his game regularly.

Added to the rather strange choice to start Agger at left-back and persist with the woefully out of form Johnson, bringing on a youngster with barely any experience ahead of a host of experienced alternatives has to make you wonder what Rodgers was really hoping to achieve on Sunday night.

At the heart of all of these squad, performance and form issues though, is the transfer policy and some serious questions need to be asked about it, such as: why doesn’t Glen Johnson have competition at right-back? Why do we have 6 first-team centre-backs, when we can only play two at a time? And why is our midfield bereft of any options if we lose one of Gerrard, Allen, Henderson and Lucas?

It is pretty clear that Martin Kelly has fitness issues and it has also become obvious that Rodgers doesn’t fancy either Enrique or Cissokho too much, so why was either a left or right back not made a priority in the summer? I say ‘either’ because I understand we’re not really in a position to be splashing out in all areas in one window.

But given that we had two top centre-backs – and Seba Coates and Andre Wisdom –  and brought in Toure in the summer, why did we go ahead and spend money on two more when we needed quality in other areas? I know we’re all quietly content with Sakho so far and Ilori will probably prove to be a good signing but when your spending is limited you have to make it count!

No more so is that a fact than in the case of Aspas and Alberto – two players that Rodgers appears to have little-to-no faith in whatsoever, because why else would he have opted to bring on a 16 year old, with no first-team experience in one of our biggest games of the season at a pivotal point in the game?

It shows a worrying trend, I’m afraid.

Many have said following the last two games against Chelsea and Man City that the club’s owners really have to back Rodgers in January and give him money to spend but the manager has had money to spend. Nobody can doubt the quality of the signings of Coutinho and Sturridge but in pretty much all of Rodgers other signings the jury is still out or has returned a very negative verdict.

A quick look over those names: Allen, Alberto, Aspas, Ilori, Cissokho, Mignolet, Borini, Sakho, Toure – none have yet proven to have been an outstanding success. Some, such as Mignolet, Sakho, Toure and Allen have had their moments but I wouldn’t say that any have offered conclusive evidence that they’re the kind of players to take Liverpool to the next level.

Meanwhile, the rest have had too little game time to judge them fairly which either means that there are better players already in front of them or that the manager is not convinced that they offer anything better than what we’ve already got and in both cases that is a huge concern.

Rodgers has spoken often about ‘looking for the right type of player’ and how they will not be making any signings unless they are better than what we’ve already got and while Enrique, Sturridge and Gerrard are all currently out – and would undoubtedly give us a big boost in terms of squad and first-team quality – a look at our lack of depth of quality is very worrying.

When Rodgers arrived we already had a fairly small squad. That squad lacked sustained quality throughout and since his arrival Brendan has added enough good players – and improved some existing – to make Liverpool a very much improved team. What he also appears to have done though, is replace a lack of quality with players he doesn’t believe have improved the squad very much.

Up to this point I’m happy with the improvements the manager has made on the pitch and behind the scenes. He’s improved the club greatly from the bleak days of Hodgson and the hopeful days of Dalglish but he has also now raised hopes and with that comes responsibility – the responsibility to create sustained improvement and the only way to do that is to get it right in the transfer market.

When the January market opens on New Years day, Liverpool are likely to get straight to work. Make no mistake – Rodgers will be backed, just as Dalglish was before him and just as Rodgers himself was in the previous 3 windows but none have come with the kind of expectation that this one has.

After an incredible start to the season, we’ve come up against two of the favourites for the Premier League this season and we’ve narrowly missed out. A little more quality on our bench and on the pitch and we’d almost certainly be looking at a decent lead at the top of the table right now.

But given that we have 5 out of 6 of the top sides at home in the new year, our final standing in the Premier League is very much in our own hands and we need to make certain that we’re absolutely fully prepared for the next 19 matches.

We’re not rolling in cash like City and Chelsea; we can’t yet even compete with the Arsenal’s and Spur’s financially, but if we spend right and make the money count, a couple of quality additions in the next couple of weeks could make all the difference and suddenly our squad for the second-half of the season could see us continue to surprise ‘experts’ by maintaining our challenge at the top.

Aspas, assaidi,Allen, borini,Alberto…almost below average players that couldn’t have made 1st team in the days of Benitez or in teams like tottenham that some of us consider less. Rodgers has to sit up in his signings cos I for one I am tired of ” lack of depth in quality” complaints from a manager that has made up to 8 signings

  • Ozred says:

At 3m assaidi is a no problems purchase. He looked good for us for for the few minutes he played and has proved more than useful at Stoke. Would much rather him coming off the bench than Moses who cost Chelsea 10m… Should get him back ASAP given all Rogers who ha about how shallow our squad is.

  • shittle says:

    Am sorry,,,but for me,wit assaidi,we don’t nid sallah,,,,,
    Assaidi,,20goals in 60matches,,,,
Sallah. 7goals,in 49matches(not so sure) for club,,,,

The thing is B Rodgers needs serious backing/investment pumped into squad: Even Southampton spent more than us in the summer.

Only us and Everton are the two teams in the top 7 who loan players in and loan players out, whereas Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City and

  • Denis D says:

Man United loan players out. B Rodgers needs some serious investment in the team. (60-70m in January) to bring in real class quality players.

Rodgers loan signings have been abyszmal and none have worked out, Sahin was sent back early, Cissokho should be sent back now and so should V Moses.

Rodgers needs to bring in five class quality players this mth: DM, CM, RW /RWF , LW /LWF and a FD

Those positions are the priority this transfer window

1: DM: Fernando(26) Of Porto or M’Vila(23) Of Rubin Kazan for 3-12M to compete and cover Leiva(26)

2: CM: Y Cabaye(27) Of Newcastle or I Rakitic(25) Of Seville for 15-20M to compete and cover Henderson(23)

3: LW / LWF: B Arfa(26) Of Newcastle for 10-14M to compete and show Ibe the ropes.

4: RW / RWF: M Salah(21) Of Basel for 7-12M to compete and cover Sterling

5: FD: L Remy(26) Of QPR to compete and cover Sturridge

Those 5 players are class and quality: Those 5 players would strengthen side dramatically.

All of those players would take the club forward: If Rodgers brings in these 5 players, we will get top 4 and have small chance of winning our first title in over 23 years. And our first ever Premiership title

In summer : Rodgers needs to clear out all the dead wood average players at club:

    GK B Jones
    CB S Coates
RB M Kelly ( Too Injury Prone) Every season he is out injured for 80% of the season
    AM Alberto
    RW / RWF Assaidi
    LWF / FD Aspas
    RWF/ FD Borini

And the if club have made top 4, In Summer Rodgers needs to bring in class, quality competition for Enrique, Johnson and Mignolet. LB, RB and GK

And two class creative midfielders who will take over from our captain fantastic in next year or two:

    CM: Koke(21) Of A Madrid or E Banega(25) Of Valencia for 16-22M
    AM: A Lallana(25) Of Southampton Or I Munian(21) Of A Bilbao for 14-20M

in January: Arfa(26) , Cabaye(27), M’Vila(23), Remy(26) and Salah(21) should all be brought to club, those players are all class, quality players who could get in the teams we are competing with , that in itself is the type of players Rodgers should be bringing to club.

we need players like Coutinho and Sturridge who will hit the ground running straight away.

    • Jamie says:

Koke ? Dream on . Banega + Ben arfa are injury prone. Salah is second rate and cabaye will be snapped up by PSG. I doubt FSG would pay the big money needed for lallana either. You need to add Allen to your deadwood list too.

      • Denis D says:

What do you mean Koke(21) dream on?

The thing is in football, the best players cost real high money.

If the owners seriously want the club competing with the likes of Chelsea and Man City for the league year in year out they need to start backing the manager with serious investment.

As whereas : Chelsea and Man City have these midfielders at their disposal:

        Luiz 24M, Ramires 22M, Obi Mikel 12M, Lampard 11.5M, Mata 24M, Oscar 25M, Willian 18M, De Bruyne 8M Hazard 32.5M

        Yaya 24M, Silva 24M, Nasri 25m, Fernandinho 30M, Garcia 16M, Rodwell 15M, Milner 18M and Navas 12M

We have Allen 15M, Henderson 18M, Gerrard( Homegrown) , Alberto 6.7M,Lucas 6.5M, Sterling 500,000, Ibe 250,000 and Moses ( on loan for season for 1M)

It shows the lack of class, creativity and quality in abundance:

So the owners need to bring in more class quality players to club to close the gap:

How can you say B Arfa is injury prone , when someone broke his leg in two places, then after that he struggled to get back to form and got a few knocks when he came back. does not make him injury prone? M Kelly is injury prone

Banega(25) Of Valencia is not injury prone, he is always in there side.

In football these days the best players cost alot of money:

We brought F Torres for 21.5 sold him for 50M , we brought L Suarez 23.5m, he is now worth over 100M

We need to buy some class quality players, no more potential

        • Jamie says:

Denis d . When will u face reality ? FSG are NOT interested in having us compete with city and Chelsea. They will try to get us o champion league ON THE CHEAP . There will be NO big spending

….and yes a player like KOKE is out of our league. Expect one or two 8-10 million cheap players or a loan or two . THATS ALL WE WILL GET.

          • Denis D says:

Jamie, That is what FSG have been doing since they came to club. But we slightly improved , but we have still not been higher than 6th since FSG took over, so their logic of spending peanut money on average players with potential will not get us Champions league football.

And B Rodgers needs to stop kissing ass and say it how it is, how can they expect him to compete and challenge for a top 4 position, when we only have 12 class, quality players at our disposal out of 25 man squad.

( Mignolet, Johnson, Agger, Skrtel, Enrique, Lucas, Sakho, Toure, Coutinho, Gerrard, Suarez and Sturridge)

And out of those 12 class, quality players 4 of them have been out injured and one came back few weeks ago but has been diabolical since he came back and is now too comfortable( Johnson) And one has just come back from Injury (Gerrard).

Our club / squad needs 120-140M pumped into squad in the next two transfer windows before we can actually have a champions league / league contending squad.

We need 10-12 good class quality players in to add to the squad and 10- 20m during the transfer window is comical. Apart from Coutinho(21) , All of Rodgers 3-11m signings have been poor and pathetic to say the least

Class and quality Players do not come cheap

  • Max says:

After the deafeat at Chelsea, it clearly shows we need more quality players coming from the sub bench. Dont forget if we dont finish in the top 4, suarez in his contract has been given the go ahead to leave.

They have to buy players who will make a immdiate impact. No more potential players, we have enough of them, in Alberto, Assaidi, Borini, etc..

We are i say two or three players from getting a guaranteed spot frothe champions league.
