Aston Villa arrive at Anfield today on the back of a narrow defeat to Arsenal at Villa Park last Monday evening. In reality the defeat should’ve been much heavier, as the return of Benteke to goal-scoring form wasn’t even enough to rescue a point for Paul Lambert’s side.

That said, the huge Belgian’s return to the goals should galvanize a Villa side that currently sits an uncomfortable 5 points off the bottom-three. By contrast, they are 25 points behind league leaders Arsenal and 19 behind their hosts on Saturday at Anfield.

The concern for Liverpool’s rather inconsistent back-line is that Benteke has previous against the Reds, with 3 goals in 3 previous appearances and he created great problems for Arsenal when he sprung into life on Monday.

Liverpool, however, are huge favourites for the game and after putting 5 past Stoke last Sunday, you’d be forgiven for believing that the manager, players and fans are very confident in the win. At the very least, it should be a case of “anything you can do we can do better”.

Liverpool’s recent run of away defeats was put firmly and resoundingly behind them against Stoke and the return of Daniel Sturridge – and possibly Mamadou Sakho and Joe Allen – should prove a further boost to the confidence in the Red camp.

The return of Sturridge means that the Reds’ deadly SAS partnership should return, and with over 30 goals between them this season (compared to Aston Villa’s Premier League total of 20), Liverpool will look at a team with 27 goals against as a fairly straight-forward encounter.

But stranger things have happened.
