With SAS back – who gets the chop?

FBL-ENG-PR-LIVERPOOL-CRYSTAL PALACEDaniel Sturridge made his long-awaited return from injury last weekend as he was included in the squad to face Stoke City at the Britannia.

The question on the lips of most Liverpool fans will be, because of how well the team has played in recent weeks, who will be axed in favour of a player that deserves to be instantly recalled the starting eleven due to his early season form and obvious goal threat?

The front five of Joe Allen, Jordan Henderson, Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling and Luis Suarez has worked well for Liverpool this past month and has seen the team put in some highly commendable performances. It is unlikely that Brendan Rodgers will want to drop either Sterling or Coutinho as they are in superb form and, of course, there is no question Suarez will continue to start and spearhead the attack.

Also in form, it would be too drastic to swap Henderson or Allen for Sturridge unless there is a change in emphasis. For me, that is likely to happen. Rodgers will possibly return to more of a 4-4-2 shape and bring in Sturridge to partner Suarez up top. With Coutinho and Sterling out on the wings cutting inside, it leaves Henderson and Lucas to occupy the centre of midfield. Joe Allen, despite playing well, is the most likely candidate for the chop due to the importance of Lucas in a Brendan Rodgers system and the fact that Henderson has been, minus Suarez, our form player of the season.

With Steven Gerrard not far from a return, the squad is looking stronger by the day and with players in-form having to be dropped, the quality of the group of players Rodgers has to choose from is increasing. Liverpool have been unfortunate with injuries in the first half of the season but have managed to maintain a top four position. If lady luck shines on the Reds from now until May, Liverpool could well challenge for the title as well as hopefully securing that top four place that has been missing for too long now.

Gerrard would be the player dropped if Lucas & Henderson start in the middle plus Coutinho & Sterling played on the wings. Gerrard wasn’t very good against Stoke so I’d agree with that but it’ll be tough for Rodgers to drop Gerrard, not just today.

Looks like Lucas got dropped to the bench.

Bad idea to drop Lucas, also not good disrupting the three man midfield.
