Reds Chasing Full-Backs from Rivals

62230_galleryLiverpool have been linked with Ashley Cole again this morning, as Brendan Rodgers looks to get his Summer wish-list penned early to avoid the pitfalls of buying in a World Cup year, as both full-back spots look likely to be strengthened.

Liverpool have apparently held a long-time interest in Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole since it became clear that Mourinho’s club are unlikely to offer the England international, who turned 33 just before Christmas, a new contract.

The 33 year olds’ experience could prove invaluable, particularly as his entire career has been spent at 2 top Premier Clubs – as well as encompassing over 100 England caps – but his age could prove to be an issue for club owners FSG, who are not keen on breaking the bank, either in wages or transfer fees, for older players.

Cole could move for very little but his wages are believed to be well in excess of the 100k per week mark and for a player looking like he’s winding down in his career, this may prove a move too far for FSG, especially given that a move for Cole would unlikely be overly popular with the club’s fans who have had an intense rivalry with Chelsea spanning over the past 10 years.

A potentially less expensive (albeit, also not a left-back) option would be Arsenal’s Bacary Sagna, who is believed to be available.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Italia, Liverpool have joined the chase with AC Milan for the Arsenal right back and may prefer a move to the Reds in order to stay in the Premier League.

Sagna has reached an impasse in contract negotiations with the Gunners, as he is believed to be demanding a lengthy contract and an increased wage.

However, according to Di Marzio, Liverpool have already entered the race and offered Sagna a lucrative deal which could sway him to make the move to Liverpool.

Again, as in the case of Cole, Sagna could prove to be too advanced in years – not to mention having had a drop in form lately – for FSG to make such an expensive signing, in terms of wages but it remains to be seen whether Brendan Rodger’s wishes will be granted and he will be allowed to make some more ‘experienced’ signings in the mould of Kolo Toure last Summer.

Let’s hope neither rumour is true. Short termism. Seriously, what is the point signing these two?

I rather develop Flanagan & Brad Smith for the long term.

This is rubbish. He’s ancient, he’ll be after a massive salary and he’s a prima donna. Why would we want him?

Eoin. He’s younger than Gerrard and Gerrard is still performing, plus he’d be a better understudy to Enrique than Cissokho.

He wouldn’t be in a position to demand a big salary from us, his only hopes of final large contract would be if he moves abroad somewhere or another prem team wants to pay big, FSG will not be paying him large amounts of money as he is past his prime but still brings a lot to the table.

If he is cheap I think he could be ideal for a season or two, that kind of composure and experience can go along way. Maldini played on well past ancient and was always sublime.

More of a worry should be replacements at centre half. Agger remains injury prone and Skrtel is either brilliant or calamitous. Toure is nearly at the end of his career. Doria from Botafogo and Matthias Ginter from Feiburg would be good young options although not yet the finished article. Sagna would be a decent bet at right back whilst Ashley Cole should not even be a consideration. Too old to have a long term future and would want too much in wages. I was hoping for Kelly and Flanagan to have better seasons than they have maybe they aren’t quite good enough. I doubt Luke Shaw would want to go to Liverpool or if FSG would be willing to spend that much on a left back but Ben Davies from Swansea could be a decent signing.
