Is It Time to Feel Sorry For Manchester United?

Manchester-United-v-Liverpool-Luis-Suarez-gro_3102532Feeling sorry for Manchester United? They are off their perch and must feel like the laughing stock of the Premier League or even top European football with their ‘football genius’ at the helm. Paul (a Scouser and life long dedicated LFC fan) expressed pity and sorrow for Manchester United before the big match last week.

Fan’s like Paul are already feeling sorry for a team who has had more success than they may have deserved but definitely more than any other team in recent history seems premature to me. They’ve only just stopped challenging for the title. They remain a financial powerhouse and a major name in European football, players will still want to play for them and they can still afford the wages.

They will be back and stronger next season, of this I’m sure. But for now all football fans must enjoy and savour this moment as it can’t last too long.  Manchester United has too much money to be a poor side for too long. In my opinion we can’t keep complaining about a boring, predictable Premier League, with leagues within leagues and then feel sorry for a team who stops winning everything.

We haven’t knocked Manchester United off their perch, we don’t play them 38 times a season. But then, they didn’t knock Liverpool of theirs either. Jamie Carragher said it best when he said, it wasn’t Fergie that knocked Liverpool off our perch it was Mr Souness. Whether you think that is fair or not, I still prefer the idea it wasn’t Fergie.

Logically Manchester United could only beat Liverpool twice a season in the league so any slump wasn’t based on their actions. I hope in time we can look back and thank Mr Moyes (as United fans may thank Souness) for being the football genius who knocked Manchester United off their perch.

An armchair fan who loves the stadium experience but likes the bread and butter of replays, moronic pundits, a drink in a pub atmosphere. LFC is my religion.

Common sense is missing from football but the situation is always complicated so I endeavour to give opinion and encourage discussion and thought about LFC.

I thought your article started off very well in an unbiased way but how can you seriously believe that Fergie wasn’t responsible for United’s phenomenal success over the last 20 years or more? Are you seriously suggesting that Fergie’s persistent success didn’t have an impact on Souness? Also Souness was only with Liverpool for a small proportion of Fergie’s long reign of supremacy. I grew up waiting 27 years for United to win the League whilst Liverpool won it most years. Fergie reversed that trend and Liverpool have not been champions for 24 years. Fergie did what he set out to do, no questions asked. However, this season it looks like Liverpool have found a great, young manager and the future is looking an awful lot better for Liverpool than United…again…no questions asked! What you say is true…it all makes things a lot more interesting.

yes of course coz when we where at our lowest, a racism storm and media frenzy was whipped up on the back of ferguson and they never sing about Hillsborough even though they no the date is coming up soon. let them rot.

Souness sucked the life blood out of our club as a manager.

No I don’t feel sorry for them. They’ve had it good for 20 years

I’m not too sure I could ever feel sorry for them, they’ve had the lion’s share of luck and success for the past 20 years. A changing of the guard is in order!

I cant even feel sorry for RVP getting injured and is now set to mis out on a few weeks of football, Infact , I cant feel sorry for United if they got relegated, they have had too much success and in my opinion they deserve more pain and sufferring i will only feel sad for them the day they BEG lfc to stop at 5-0 like when moyes brought on Ferdinand for Matta in the 83rd min !!!

Kopites will always be furios with Fergie’s long maintained success but alas i think LFC’s on the “Go” themselves now because Brendan seems to understand the culture, tradition & ways of LFC & it’s obvios he’s trying his best possible to return us back to the upper echelons of English football.. Fergie might have been United’s messiah while Souness might have been LFC’s scape goat, but there’s only so much both of ’em could have done if it wasnt for fate… LFC fans that witnessed the Ataturk miracle would definitly understand the fact that fate shapes ones destiny than one man who has boosted to do so & eventually doing so… Souness was just on the wrong side of United’s kick-off to glory.. But with all that’s happened this season, isnt it obvios that fate has equally destined Rodgers for greater deeds @ LFC wit our tactical genius (Moyes) been @ the wrong end of our sudden rise… C,mon you reds….
