We Must Support Red’s England Stars

steven-gerrard-england-620-415135178-3256488It’s hard to really know where the relationship between Liverpool fans and the England side began to sour. I can remember back to the ’98 World Cup, and a young Michael Owen astounding the world; how proud we all were, supporting our young ‘Scouse’ star on the world’s biggest stage.

But that felt like a one off, things had already begun to change.

The history of England and Liverpool – as much as club v country – is a long and chequered one with many fans feeling that the FA are only really interested in Liverpool when they want something. Such as our captain.

You could even look to the involvement of the FA in the aftermath of Hillsborough (not to mention the fact that they knew the ground wasn’t up to standards prior to the game) and the fact that it took until just over a year ago for them to issue a formal ‘apology’.

Either way, Liverpool and England just don’t mix these days. It is something never more apparent than when the England squad is announced and the collective groans ring out when we see how many of our players have been called up this time.

Of course, when you see how poorly treated players are on international duty, it’s not hard to understand as we’ve had our own fair share of players returning from international duty injured. And at such a crucial time in this season for us the international break probably couldn’t come at a worse time.

However, it’s something that just isn’t worth moaning about anymore as England duty is as inevitable as David Moyes being axed as Man Utd manager.

Despite the poor timing from our point of view, I think that given the incredible form of our English quintet at the moment, the best thing we can do is give them as much support as possible.

It may sound like a really simplistic point of view but there is something called ‘the greater good’, and if Gerrard, Johnson, Henderson, Sterling and Sturridge can continue their form (or in Johnson’s case, improve his) for England over the next 12 days then it’ll be like they’d never skipped a beat.

The international break can often be the death-knell for teams in a purple patch and it has often been the case for us before, as players go away with their international squads and see nothing but training sessions for more than 2 weeks. It can knock a player’s confidence and really destroy his good run of form.

With so many of our attacking talent being in the England squad though, and being in such impressive form, it really would benefit us for them to not only play for their country over the next couple of matches but also play well. There is always the risk of injury but really, players are more likely to suffer injury during training than anything else.

And, I’m sorry to say it, but if England winning a couple of games using any number of Reds players has a bearing on Liverpool’s season continuing in the same vein as it has until now, then I’ll happily get behind England as loudly as the next person!
