Image for Liverpool’s Defence: Who Do We Point the Finger At?

Crystal-Palace-v-Liverpool-Premier-LeagueSo we missed out. Yes, it was disappointing, especially the way in which we let it slip (pardon the pun, Steven Gerrard). Although this has been a successful season, one cannot help but feel defeated, disappointed and demoralised.

We had it in our hands and threw it away. But where did it all go wrong? If there was one particular incident which we can say, that’s where we lost it, what would that moment be? Lets look at the most crucial moments – and players – and see what might have been, or who is the biggest liability to the team. Lets review our Achilles heel (defence) and  see who we should replace or who we can ‘blame’ for missing out this season.

Where do you start. Senior Johnson and his losing possession 50% of each time he tries to beat a defender is responsible for about 10 goals a season. So, Johnson must be shipped out, along with cissokho and henrique when is fit, if he is ever fit. Right back, Flanagan/Andre wisdom.

Goalkeeper who can’t command the area and scares me each time a ball goes in the box . Competition needed, to push him out if need be. See Hart at city being replayed this season.

Cissokho for being aweful in passing, possession and controlling the ball.

The own goal king that is kolo toure? Never mind that pass v west broom. I so wish young Llori played and messed up instead of him. At least he would grow as a player…..toure is toure and nothing is going to improve.

    Skertel and agger haven’t
been the same for some time. Coaching methods?

Moving in from there. Lack of defensive cover has cost us dearly . Hindsight is beautiful. We needed a holding mf player in jan. In the mould of mascherano or Dembele .

Add left back, centre defender, holding mf players x2 and keeper. Maybe a defensive coach needed too to help BR.

Like this article Shaheed, can’t put the blame on any individual. Like the mention of United and Chelsea reading this!

Toure is not the own goal king Skrtel is.Our problem is three things:mobility, concentration and organization/positioning.The way we play requires mobility, so I think Illori and Enrique will solve that,Organization requires a leader like Terry,Carragher.

Ilori is very young and has made some glaring positional errors at Grenada. Could help us but needs to be eased in. Enrique’ defensive concentration is probably the worst of all our defenders. We definitely needs a new left back.

    Defending is Rodgers Achilles heel.
