Alexis Sanchez: Is he the solution?

Sanchez put Spain to the sword during the group stages

Italy vs Uruguay will go down as one of the most famous games in World Cup history, sadly not because it was a great game, if anything it was only marginally better than England’s dire game against Costa Rica, but because of once again Luis Suarez and those infamous teeth of his.

If you had asked what I would be doing between 5pm and 7pm on the 24th June a few weeks ago I would have told you, hopefully watching a surprisingly impressive performance from England in their last game before the knock out stages. How wrong I could be! Instead I was sat watching Italy vs Uruguay hoping for an Italian win, for no other reason, than to make sure our very own talisman, who all but single-handedly dumped England out of the World Cup a few days earlier, doesn’t play any further part in the tournament, thus not risking his health for the start of the new season.

Ironically I got 50% of that wish, he wouldn’t be playing any further part in the World Cup!

Now I actually agree with some pundits who have sympathised with Suarez in saying that a bite isn’t as bad as an elbow to the head, or a leg breaking tackle (cough, Roy Keane. Cue Man U fans to get off their moral high horse) however I can not for a second condone his actions in the slightest. What on Earth possesses someone to bite? To be brutally honest its an absolutely bizarre action.

Ever since the news broke, Suarez has been linked with a move away, be it Liverpool saying enough is enough or that Suarez was trying to engineer a move away, and that the bite was his way of doing it. Now for starters I am not sure enough is enough and without any quotes from Liverpool it is hard to know where they stand on the situation.

Furthermore I really struggle to believe that this was some master plan by Suarez to leave Liverpool, as if it was, it is one of the most flawed plans I have ever heard. He would have known there would be a ban involved, a ban that would firstly rule him out of the World Cup. What player is so desperate to leave a £200,000 plus a week contract that they get themselves kicked out of the World Cup?! And in addition surely the fact he could potentially pick up a club ban, that he has, surely makes him a less appealing player for any potential suitors. Nevermind the fact that any team buying him would have a player who is sadly one of the most hated players in the world right now seemingly.

Despite this, ever since the rumour mill went into overdrive since the bite, the one constant it seems is Barcelona’s interest. They seemingly haven’t been put off by the bite and subsequent ban and are willing to offer up to £80 million for our talisman. That, or £50 million plus Alexis Sanchez.

Now I am still not sure how I stand on the should we keep Suarez debacle. However there is one thing that I can be all but sure on. That is that Alexis Sanchez is a £3o million, top player. Even before the rumours, I have been watching all the Chile matches with intent. I have loved their do or die attitude and one player who has epitomized that and added class and guile is Sanchez.

I try and watch Barcelona, mainly so I can admire the brilliance of Messi and Iniesta, but one player who I always felt got unfairly treated by commentators and pundits is Sanchez. He works ever so hard for the team, and has an end product as well; 19 goals is a testament to that. I think this World Cup, people have realised what a good player Sanchez is, and his performance against Brazil will have done his reputation the world of good. Thus do I believe Sanchez is worth the extra £30 million? Yes.

Could Sanchez be a part of any swap deal with Barca for Luis Suarez?

Could Sanchez be a part of any swap deal with Barca for Luis Suarez?

However that is only the half of it. He may be a £30 million player, but is he the £30 million player that we need and furthermore how far would he go, in terms of replacing Luis Suarez?

I think in general play, there are certainly some similarities between Suarez and Sanchez. Both have wonderful technical ability in one on one situations, both are established goal scorers, and both have a fantastic work ethic. These are some of Suarez’s best traits and as a result it would certainly seem Sanchez would be a more than adequate replacement. However the one thing that I think Suarez brings that Sanchez doesn’t is what I refer to as the ‘Messi effect’. By this, I mean the sole reason it’s Messi or Suarez makes defenders make mistakes, and makes defenders overly worry about them, and spend less time worrying about his strike partner, in Liverpool’s and Suarez’s case, Sturridge.

Nevertheless, I lean towards the thought that Sanchez would be a good addition to the team. Even though he doesn’t have the ‘Messi effect’ he is a wonderful footballer, and would bring even more speed to our team. However with the exception of Lallana and potentially Origi, I wouldn’t want us to add anyone else to the forward line with the additional £50 million and instead add to our weak area which is our defence (unless that James Rodriguez fancies wearing the famous Red!). 31 goals can be replaced by both scoring goals and conceding less at the end of the day!

if we could get £50 mill and sanchez i would jump at the chance. give sanchez the limelight that messi is so scared to share at liverpool and i think he can terrify defenders like the other two with a bit of time. hes only 25, he looks as good as suarez did two years ago. may not end up as good, but hes the best suarez replacement ive seen. sadly james rodriguez is unrealistic, but sanchez may be possible.
