With England’s first game down and two to go, after last night’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Italy, we take a look at how the Reds in Roy Hodgson’s starting line-up faired against the wise, old Italians.
Glen Johnson – As with his Liverpool place, Johnson’s starting spot is almost guaranteed for England as there is so little in the way of any sort of competition. What he lacks defensively he normally makes up for going forward and none of the other candidates offer the same threat in the opposition half.
Against an typically well drilled Italian side though even his usual attacking threat was nullified and he was as lax at the back as we’ve come to expect but he’s unlikely to lose his place as all of the alternatives are so suspect themselves. If only young Jon Flanagan had been given a deserved call up to the 23 man squad.
