So, Liverpool have finally completed the clubs’ fourth major signing of the summer, as Lazar Markovic completed his move to Anfield from Benfica, as his former club announced the player’s departure first.
Signed for a fee reported to be £20 million, the Serbian international becomes Liverpool’s most exciting signing of the summer, following the acquisitions of Emre Can, Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, and despite being 20 years of age, Markovic will no doubt be a regular starter for the Reds this coming season.
With the attacker’s medical having been scheduled to take place a number of days ago initially, the transfer appeared to be dragging on much longer than expected, after the player had been spotted leaving Portugal on Saturday morning but the medical finally took place on Monday afternoon and, soon after, a number of pictures emerged of Markovic posing with fans and a Liverpool shirt.
Speaking to LFCtv, Markovic said “I hope that I will fulfil the expectations of the supporters, coaches, players and all connected to the club. I have seen what the players are like, I have seen what the supporters are like, and I cannot wait to start playing here.”
With Liverpool due to play their first pre-season friendly on Wednesday when Brendan Rodgers’ side take on Brondby, interest will no doubt be high to see whether Markovic makes an appearance in the squad, along with his fellow new Reds but is likely to only travel with his team-mates.
Welcome to Anfield, Lazar Markovic!
