Micah Richards has Premier League title winning experience

With Liverpool so far having signed exclusively midfield or attacking players, there have been big question marks about when some defensive reinforcements will be brought in to give some much needed stability to an area that many believe cost Liverpool the title over the last several months of last season.

So far, Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno have both been close to signing for the Reds but now Micah Richards’ name has been added to that list, as his future at Manchester City seems even less certain than it has at any point over the last two seasons.

The City player, still just 26, seemingly has a lot to offer still and the quality he’s shown over the years at City hasn’t diminished, only been put aside in the face of expensive, well-known stars as City’s owners looked to ramp up their drive to bring in some trophies.

Richards is likely to be available for less than £10 million, and is able to play at either centre-back or righ-back, giving him the added benefit of feeling like two signings in one. Whilst his huge amount of Premier League experience (244 games) means that he’d be ready to ‘hit the ground running’, as it were. Perhaps most importantly however, Richards would bring with him that knowledge of what it takes to win a Premier League title, having played a key part in City’s first Premier League success.

Richards has long been a close friend of Daniel Sturridge and with the large English contingent at the club, would no doubt fit right in. Only time will tell whether Liverpool make a move for the player. At present though, if there is interest a deal would likely be able to be pushed through quite quickly, with City looking like they’d be happy to shift Richards off their books.

Would Richards be an improvement on Liverpool’s current defenders? Would his acquisition give Glen Johnson the push he needs to up his game?

I would prefer Micah Richards over James Milner as JM is a bit cart-horsey at times and tends to drift out of games – MR is usually at hand

I don’t think Richards would be a very good buy. Isn’t he very injury proned ? We already have too many high injury prone players as it is with Agger, Kelly and Enrique surely. Even Johnson gets a fair amount of injuries too . If we were to bring him in on loan that wouldn’t be quite such a risk on the other hand but how much first team football has he had in the last season or 2

If we sign Richards, I believe it will be on loan. If it works out, great, we’ll make it permanent when his contract ends next summer. If not, no stress, we let him go and Wisdom comes in after a year of playing in the PL with WBA. If Richards plays well and so does Wisdom, even better, as it means we can let GJ go for whatever we need to as RB is covered for several years with Richards, Wisdom and Flanagan (Richards and Wisdom can partner Sakho at CB with Illori when necessary too)
