News this morning would lead you to believe that Manchester United are to make a move for Borussia Dortmund centre back, Matts Hummels.

The German international has been linked with a host of top clubs in recent years and is widely regarded as one of the top 5 centre backs in Europe, with over 220 appearances (and 20 goals) for Dortmund since his first loan move to the club in 2007.

United are believed to be considering a £20 million bid for the player – which will no doubt be turned down – with a view to negotiating a transfer. That valuation is probably a good £5-10 million short of what Dortmund value the player at but if the player shows an interest in leaving, a fee of between £25-30 million would no doubt be acceptable.

With Liverpool seemingly hell-bent on paying over £20 million for Dejan Lovren, you have to wonder whether Brendan wouldn’t be better off using that money to go out an sign a genuine top-class, proven international.

Whilst Lovren may yet prove to reach the level of a defender like Hummels, there is no guarantee and there seems little point in paying barely a few million less for a player like the Croat, when adding a few million more would ensure top-quality joining the club.

Not only that, but with United missing any European action this year, there’s a very real chance that a player like Hummels would reject a move anyway, leaving Liverpool to offer him a move to a Champions League participant with real ambitions.

Liverpool will no doubt end up paying over the odds for Lovren, but it would be nice to see the club showing genuine ambition and pushing for a really top defensive signing.
