The former Chelsea striker looks like a real target for Brendan Rodgers’ side

Over the past 3-4 days all rumours of moves for the likes of Cavani, Falcao and so on have gone strangely (and a little worryingly) quiet. Most Liverpool fans had already begun bracing themselves for a disappointing conclusion to the summer transfer window, in terms of a new striker but we all still live in hope.

However, the news that the club have spoken with veteran former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o comes not only as a huge shock but also a grave disappointment.

In years gone by the Cameroonian has been one of the best forwards in world football but his best years have been behind him for some time.

With Sturridge Liverpool’s only ‘first-choice’ striking option and Lambert and Borini relatively able backup, Reds have been waiting patiently for that special signing that shows the Suarez money isn’t going to go to waste.

Last season at Chelsea he contributed an impressive 12 goals and 6 assists but he is also a year older and a year slower. It’s highly unlikely that he could offer as much in the system Liverpool use, which involves pace, power and aggression with and without possession. As we’ve already seen from one or two newer players, adapting to Liverpool’s style isn’t easy and, at 33, it’ll be even harder for Eto’o.

But then again, on the other hand, if the striker is being lined up as back-up for the seemingly soon-to-depart Fabio Borini then it could make a lot of sense, provided there is also a much more impressive signing lined up to compliment the Reds’ forward line.

Put simply, if Liverpool hope to have a great season then a top, respected striker is a necessity and an ageing free-transfer just isn’t going to cut it.

No matter how good he used to be, on his own, the prospect of signing Samuel Eto’o is profoundly underwhelming but as a fourth accompaniment to Sturridge, another top striker, and Rickie Lambert it would be a fairly shrewd move.

These are fine lines however, and if Eto’o is to conclude Liverpool’s moves for attacking talent then we could be in for an almighty struggle if we lose Sturridge to injury next season.

Of course, these are only rumours at present and many will be hoping it stays that way..

Tottally rubbish. Proven at Chelsea. 100 million spend, no striker on sight . Just what is going on. As it stands, let’s enjoy a few wed night matches…. Won’t last long

If LFC signs Eto,I will be so disappointed. We must get a good striker if we want to secure top 4.This season is a make or break season for BR and FSG.

Cavani, 50 million is worth buying. One top 4 finish is worth that. Surely, after finishing second is a step back , no?

Alternatives, hulk? Yeah yeah, wasn’t that good in the Wc, and hasn’t played top level the last two years… Worth a gamble though and a long chat with him!

    Eto? No

He wants £130.000 per week. At the age of 33. He thinks he is still at Stamford Bridge.

etoo will be the best seasoner option.REMEMBER he had been chelsea best striker of last season but lack confident on himself because of mourhino own way of coaching,I THINK if liverpool signs despite his age,and bust his confident,we will not fill suarez absence. If u had watch etoo’s first match at chelsea, how was confident he was brian even though he never scored.Pls judge by your fillings but judge best on how played the last premier league and remember it was his first even season in England under a very had manager.pls Liverpool go for etoo now before it is too late look at his career and you will see he is a competitor and I Know I wants to prove
