As Liverpool’s pursuit of a suitable replacement for Luis Suarez continues, the Falcao’s and Cavani’s of this world appear to have been replaced, once again, by the much less illustrious up-and-coming stars. Namely Mauro Icardi and Keita Balde Diao.
The Reds have been linked with both youngsters via a number of sources over the weekend, particularly in Italy, with a bid in the region of £16 million believed to have been rejected for Keita.
Icardi and Keita are both young, leading stars in Serie A, aged just 21 and 19 respectively and are both going to no doubt have long, successful careers. But with just 14 goals between them last season, neither would seem to be the answer to a prolific striker such as Suarez.
Over the past fortnight, Liverpool had been reported to have made approaches/enquiries for both Falcao and Cavani but neither appears to have come to anything, and as the transfer window draws nearer to a conclusion it appears ever more likely that Liverpool fans will end up with a feeling of disappointment.
At such a young age, strikers are rarely prolific (at least not at the top level) and it is impressive that both are regulars for top Italian sides. But while the Italian top-flight is notorious for its’ ability to keep even star strikers below 20 league goals, the fact that both have yet to pass 10 league goals means that neither would be considered a viable replacement, simply an addition to the squad. However, when you consider that both are likely to require a good £20-25 million to acquire, you wonder whether Brendan Rodgers would be better served taking what money he has left elsewhere.
30+ goal a season strikers are so rare these days that you’re expected to put down at least £50 million and, at the moment, apart from a handful, most of those are already at at a top club. A step down, and you’re looking at 20 goal a season strikers, of which there are a fair few but not many that really set the pulses racing and when you’re being quoted £20+ million for a player like Wilfried Bony, it makes the job all the more difficult.
Unless something comes of the interest in Cavani, or Liverpool have got their eye on somebody that most haven’t considered, you have to wonder whether a loan or short-term move for an older, more experienced star would be more viable. The alternative is to splurge a fortune on an untried or unremarkable talent and neither will be enough to come close to filling the void that Suarez has left behind.

Given that there is no replacement for Suarez, only Messi or Ronaldo could suffice, I do not believe Liverpool will try and replace him with another player. Yes of course Liverpool need a new No.7 but it will be a different approach to football. Cavani & Falcao are pipe dreams, it will never happen. Even if Liverpool tried, they would not come to Liverpool. At best we can hope for Bony and at worst Eto’o, but to be honest, I think this article pretty hits the nail on the head, Rodgers will try and get a young and upcoming player who shows promise, potential and desire, the hope will be of course that he grows into a 20+ goal a season player. This is of course where the problem may be, for every Sturridge & Coutinho, there’s a Borini and Assaidi!
You have a defeatist mentality and its embarrasses all of Liverpool. Liverpool is one of the top clubs in the entire world from a supporter perspective. I was reading an article on a MCFC Forum that involved journalists from various tabloids. The topic was why Man City doesn’t get the the majority of attention in magazines, media, online journals, etc even after a Championship. They said a team like Liverpool draws much more attention. A club like Liverpool gets more clicks, more views, etc. On a global scale Liverpool and Manchester United are rivals. But Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City are far behind. The problem with Liverpool for a few years was that the owners weren’t willing to spend. The current owners WILL spend now that the team has a foundation to build off of thanks to BR. It may not be oil money but they are going to bring in who they need to bring in to compete at the highest levels.
Now if I was a Manchester United fan….I’d be scared. I’m from the US so I know the mentality of some of these owners who are over here. The one thing saving Man U right now is the fact that so many sponsors got suckered in before City began to be the power of Manchester. Manchester United’s owners will be penny pinching soon enough.

We stii eager quality striker,, that is the only position we lacking. Rodgers and his fellows hv done good job but we hv problem with them in striking side.we need facao and cavani the only replacable and satisfying striker.
I’d rather see Bony at Liverpool than Cavani or Falcao. People hear names and think they are better based on names. They don’t think of chemistry and role.
