This season, the return of Champions League football brings back many memories for fans

May 25th 2005 will forever be etched in my memory. It was the day I can honestly say I experienced true happiness, it allowed me the right to brag about my club’s history from my own point of view, rather than my parents; it was simply brilliant. Liverpool’s unprecedented comeback during the Champions League final against AC Milan is many fans favourite footballing moment, the night is certainly mine! Can you believe that the 2004/2005 Champions league campaign that resulted in such a momentous night started a decade ago?

Liverpool v Grazer AK on August 24th 2004 was my first taste of a European night at Anfield. Even though we lost, going through with an aggregate score of 2-1, I finally understood what the fuss was all about. At that time I, and I am sure the rest of the crowd that day, could never have predicted what would follow during that campaign, but I can at least say I was there to see the beginning. Who would think a team including the likes of Darren Potter, Salif Diao, and Milan Baros could go on to win so historically?

I hesitate to say that the Liverpool team who won in Istanbul is the worst to ever lift the Champions League trophy, but, I will say they were definitely a stronger team than their combined parts. Team work, support, and will to win definitely over-powered the Italian giants. When I look at that team, and compare them to Liverpool’s current squad, I can’t help but feel hope and optimism about an impressive run in this year’s competition. Our players are so much more accomplished individually, and have a confidence that is born through winning, and succeeding. Only Gerrard remains from the Istanbul squad; I’d love to see him lift big ears aloft again.

After a 4-year absence from the competition, it is fitting that Liverpool return to the Champions League a decade on from their victorious run in the competition. I don’t usually use words such as fate and luck, but it does feel like destiny that we are returning a decade on. I can’t express how excited I am that we are back in the premier European competition! Seeing Liverpool play the top sides from other European leagues is where I feel like the club belong; there is something so satisfying about watching Steven Gerrard tackle Lionel Messi!

I really hope that we follow up last season’s premier league title challenge with a good league performance. For me, however, this season is more about Europe. I’d love nothing more than to see Liverpool win the league, the event is on my bucket list, but seeing Liverpool back amongst the best teams in the world competing for the most highly rated trophy in club football is so important. I would love to win it again! What are your hopes for Liverpool in the Champions League this season?
