Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics

Suarez was responsible for a huge percentage of the Reds goals last season

Well, I guess we are all familiar with this famous Mark Twain quote. It fantastically sums up all there is to know about football punditry on the telly. Guys like Jamie Redknapp or Owen Hargreaves, extremely biased and more good-looking than football-savvy. I totally agree with Roy Keane, who once famously said that he would rather watch football with no sound. But never mind those who are there to educate us and tell what is right and what is wrong. Let’s talk stats.

Over the years the popularity of services such as OPTA rocketed sky high. After every single game on TV, the first thing we see is numerous statistics about possession, shots, completed passes etc. We are being led to believe that it explains why and how the game was won. Most so-called specialists agree that possession is key to success. They hail Barcelona of five years ago and Pep Guardiola with his Bayern side, who I agree are very good at the game. But is possession really the key to winning games?

I remember Germany humiliating Brazil a month ago. According to official FIFA stats Brazil had more of the ball! And the same chart shows that Brazil had more dangerous attacks and shots. Real Madrid did exactly the same to Munich in Champions League semi last season. And, though it hurts me to say this, so did Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea taking the title away from Anfield in April.

So I guess possession is overrated. Important, but overrated. So maybe it’s created chances that wins you the game? I’d half agree with that, but when you look at what “chance” means for those stats people, you’ll understand my concern. It’s a shot on target. Which means that if someone missed a penalty or a sitter in front go goal, then it wouldn’t be classified as a “chance”? Give me a break. And shots on target vary. From those optimistic 30-yard lobs at goal to penalties from 12 yards, both classify as chances? Nonsense.

And the same can be said about any stat. Completed passes, dribbles, dangerous attacks. They can’t guarantee you three points. Which leads us to the only stat that matters – goals. That is the only thing that guarantees you victories. With Luis Suarez gone to Barcelona LFC lost about half of all goals scored last Premier League season, with 31 scored, 12 assisted and 6 penalties won. Last season Liverpool scored 101 and conceded 50, take the Uruguayan’s figures away (goals, assists, pens won) from LFC and they have scored only 2 more than conceded.

So, my question is: is there a player in the current squad who can deliver half a century of goals for Liverpool, with the defence not looking any less shaky? Oh, and don’t forget that despite all the good work done last season Rodgers has to win something this year and do well in the Champions League, or face criticism.

Do you not feel you hurt your own argument there on the last point? You say stats and talking heads are not accurate because they remove nuance, the little details of the game.. And then you say something as broad as 101 goals minus suarez’ 49 minus 50 we conceded gives goal difference of 2.. As if the new signings can’t make up some of those assists and goals.. As if sterling and Lallana and Markovic and lambert won’t get in those goal scoring positions.. You are right we won’t score 101 next season but we will score way more than half of that.. Plus Lovren will go a long way to patching up our “shaky” defence.

Has the author considered teams do evolve? Fine, let’s subtract LS7s goals, score less even and concede less. Will that have improved our chance of controlling and winning games? There are lots of goals in this team and it’s why signings like Lallana and Markovic were signed. Most important signing remains BR to me.

Observing stats from a single individual might not always serve as a way to predict the final outcome, without considering other variables. The focus on a star performer sometimes hinders our ability to recognize the contributions of an overall collective effort.

Even if liverpool finish the season on 50 goals as the author reckons. Its important to bare in mind its not the Total of goals scored that determines your position in the pl but rather games won. By cutting goals against by 50%. An wining games on a average score set of 1-0 or 2-1, you will find that it can still be possible to end up in the top 4.

Rodgers stumbled across his Liverpool team style last season. When once he spoke of possession being everything, controlling the game and winning the ball back quickly, his team now is more about counter attack and pace in all areas…blitzing teams. Now he must find a happy medium to avoid disasters like Chelsea, Crystal Palace & Hull

am only worried abt brendan rodgers being sentimental in his selection, d keeper, sturridge nd d mentality of d team…. Dr. steve peters has some work to do… Fix those nd we are ready… YNWA

Rodgers is doing a fantastic this window. All that is left is for him to get a fast, strong and energetic striker. Suarez what Good but it was liverpool style of play that made him prolific in front of goal. Someone like Wissam Ben Yedder, carlos vela, govanni dos santos or lacazette’ll fill in for luis. I don’t think we need a big center forward because no matter how prolific he is in front of goal, he will struggle. Like ibrahimovic did @ barca.
