Sturridge has some big shoes to fill but is more than capable of stepping in to them

This is a big season for Daniel Sturridge.

Last season, he was probably considered our second most important attacker behind Luis Suarez. Of course there were benefits to that, as defenders were usually so terrified of the Uruguayan that they often forgot to defend against him as well. But it’s likely that being the confident player he is, Sturridge was itching to be considered Liverpool’s main man up front. That’s natural for any striker.

So now that Suarez has departed for Barcelona, it’s up to Sturridge to take on the mantle of Liverpool’s primary goal threat, with only Ricky Lambert and possibly Fabio Borini backing him up at the time of writing. He definitely has the potential; if you look back to our opening five games last season when Suarez was suspended, Sturridge managed to score 4 goals. Not late goals at the end of a thrashing either, these were vital match-winning ones. So we know he has the ability to conjure something up out of nothing; perhaps not quite to the level that Suarez could, but he has the ability.

He’s fantastic with long range shots, his goal against Aston Villa away came as a result of some brilliant footwork to dribble past the defender, he scored vital headed goals from corners against Man United at home and Everton away, and I’ve never been more confident in a striker scoring than when I see Sturridge go one on one against the keeper.

However, there are other things Sturridge will have to contend with this season. We saw in a few games that he’s capable of operating on his own up front, but with Suarez gone teams will make more of an effort to mark and contain him this season; if they cut off his supply line it’s much more unlikely that we’ll score (though I’m sure our other forwards can find a way). The extra attention he gets could hurt him.

He also needs to stay fit. Sturridge missed about a third of our games last season through injury, and if he’s going to be our first choice striker that’s something we cannot allow to happen without a replacement of similar quality available to slot in. Ricky Lambert’s a good stiker, but I’d rather not have to rely on him two months at a time.

Honestly, I think Sturridge will handle the attention just fine this year. Of course, there will be the odd game where teams come to Anfield and park the bus, a lot like it was under Rafa, but if the likes of Sterling, Coutinho, Markovic and Lallana do their jobs effectively, we’ll still make plenty of chances and Sturridge will have no problem scoring them.

He also needs to make sure there’s no World Cup hangover, but considering England only made three appearances before bowing out he shouldn’t have much trouble with fitness like others. If he can stay fit, I have no doubt that Sturridge will be the league’s top scorer in 2015.

Drummer, gamer and football fanatic. I love to write about Liverpool and spend most of my time thinking about the mighty Reds. That or Game of Thrones.

yea, of course everybody would just totally forget about the second best striker in the league because it’s only possible to pay any attention to one attacking player at a time right…
