Despite all the talk in the past week or so being of Manchester United’s two new signings, Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao, Red legend John Barnes believes that Liverpool will still outdo their bitter rivals in the race for the top-4.
Speaking to talkSPORT yesterday, Barnes said “I believe Liverpool will finish third but I don’t think they’ll be far off the top.
“Manchester United don’t have the consistency yet to challenge for a top three or four spot.”
Whilst the Reds had much of their business done early, with only one player (Mario Balotelli) signed in the final weeks of the window, Manchester United had only completed the signings of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw until very late in the window and Di Maria, Blind and Falcao all joined the club late on, with many referring to these players as being nothing more than ‘panic buys’.
Of course, not many would complain about ‘panic buying’ Di Maria and Falcao but much of Liverpool’s first-team was already established, whilst United’s has seen much change over the summer, (including a third manager in 3 seasons) meaning that Barnes may have a point in consistency being the key to both clubs challenges at the top of the table.
Barnes believes that, while Liverpool will not yet oust Chelsea and Manchester City from the top 2 places, they will still challenge and not be far off the Premier League’s two super-rich clubs.
Let us know where you think Liverpool will finish this season. Have Man Utd’s signings got you worried?

Digger Barnes was the most gifted talent in the history of English football, a supremely talented individual who is yet to be surpassed in the English game and the most entertaining i have seen. Not like these robotic players of today or these ‘athletes’ who kick a ball hard and watch it spin and curl 10 feet in the air. Barnes was the best.
