Balotelli and Sterling were two of few positives for Liverpool

After Liverpool’s third league defeat in their first 5 games of the season, Brendan Rodgers spoke honestly about the state of the Liverpool side and told the assembled press in his post match press conference “We were nowhere near the standard today. We made a really slow start and before we knew it we were 2-0 down.

“Lots of elements in our game have been very good and everyone has seen that over the last couple of seasons, but it is just not quite happening for us at the moment. We have a lot of work to do and today was very disappointing in terms of performance.

“They had better intensity than us. Our performance level wasn’t anywhere near what I would expect. We made too many long passes; normally our passing is shorter, crisper and faster in the game. Today we didn’t show enough composure on the ball.

“But, first and foremost, I thought the intensity of our game wasn’t quite at the level. But that’s something that we will look at. I’m very fortunate that I’ve got an honest group of players that know that sort of level isn’t what we expect. We will, over the course of the season, get better and better.”

With Liverpool now having a negative goal difference for the first time in almost 2 seasons and looking likely to concede a goal each and every time the opposition come forward, there are seemingly huge issues for the Liverpool manager to confront and the work must really start now to rectify a glaring issue that has still not been addressed after it caused the Reds to miss out on the Premier League last season.

Drop Steven G ,he’s no Andrea Pirlo

  • collie says:

They had a player who was intensity personified in Luis. Without him, the team needs to be restructured from top to bottom, starting with the goalkeeper, then the centre backs. Lets see how they are in December, then see where they need a world-class player and go and get him.

  • Ged says:

Mignolet does not inspire confidence in the defence, he has no presence and seems to fear crosses. Step 1 would be to get a more commanding goalkeeper. Gerrard now looks a yard off the pace which is is really sad. Henderson is great at covering ground but his passing is really negative. We do not seem to have a midfielder with the ability (or confidence) to shoot from distance and we are badly missing Sturridge.

Problems? Start with Brendan and his inability to organise any defensive line up. Give him a billion and he won’t fix it. Poor management pure and simple. See Reina’s performance and how it dropped since Rogers came in. To be honest, mignolet was never good enough but, he is getting worse, with every game.
Problems? Step forward Gerrard. Can’t play in that role, needs to be further forward and play once every 7 days to allow his legs max recovery time. He is not Andrea Pirlo as stated above.
Problems? Brendan spent all summer lecturing everyone in how football should be played. Underestimated the contribution Suarez made. He was involved in 50 goals last season. Brent was very, very good at claiming all the credit.
Problems? Adding league 1/championship players to the team. Paying southampton 50 million was criminal/gross misconduct and it made the Carol deal look shrewd. I thought we learned from buying overpriced British players?? Why is this club so bad at learning from past failure? Why?

Anyway, BR needs to bring in a defence coach. He simply doesn’t know how. Or maybe give his pals at talk sport a call for tips.

Bring back Sami Hypia as defence coach

      • Erin says:

Hyppia does have a job. But along those lines…. The quickest fix, I’d to get someone specifically for the defensive work. We have spent more then Chelsea, arsenal, and Man U in defenders last two years. All combined with worse outcomes then before. Worse still, Brendan falls out with agger. Why is that? Did he have the balls to speak out?

  • Jerry says:

The team needs to put more sessions into defending set pieces. Mignolet has to bear the bulk of the blame here as he is just not inspiring confidence in his commanding of the defenders in the box. Opposition are now marking Stevie in order to minimize his cross-field passes. The other central midfielders need to step up to the plate in distributing the ball. Other than Sterling, the rest of the attacking midfielders aren’t running at the opposition enough which is required if we are to use Mario as the sole attacking focal point. Getting close in support to Mario is required for successful one-twos to break down stubborn defensive resistance as Mario is no Suarez, hence he’ll not be creating his own chances and will need to rely on his attacking midfield for the supply.

At the age of 56, I wud make a better defensive contribution than Sakho. BR please get a defence coach. Didn’t u learn that frm last season. Your team is made up of overpriced mediocre players. Get a new centre back to play with Skirtle and a new defensive midfielder. Terminate Borini’s contract with full payment if he refuses to leave. It still makes more economic sense to do so. Make an offer for Petr Czech. Mignolet will not improve. He has degressed frm his already poor form since last term. BR your transfer dealings produced more failures than success. Get a panel headed by Alan Hansen and King Kenny to assist u.

  • johnpaul says:

Assaidi, Allen, borini, Alberto, aspas, mignolet, sahin, sakho, emre can, loads of mediocres to become the heart of such a great club and the reason the likes of shelvey and Aquilaini were laid off. BR transfer policy is bad and definitely has to be provided with a defensive back up coach..i pray the worse doesn’t happen

  • debkanta says:

He should have got better replacement for suarez. use the right player for the right setup. Against physical sides we need big lads to play . stop buying british mediocre talent .Give younger players more chance , time for stevie to play only for champions league .get a good defence coach as Rodgers is not good in organising defence. He needs to give some of the players whom he brought borrini and allen off as they donot seem to bring any goals.get some of these lads to run …lucas ,lallana, lambert. if they need to defend well. Buy world class striker then only there is a outside chance of top 4 finish.

  • vickyboy says:

Give young suso a chance in that midfield role he will shine.

  • Mr Dignity says:

Get us already made players we don’t need to rebuild cuz we’ve already show what we are capable of doing seasons ago,

  • alex says:

after watching lovren and sakho hitting each other for a simple clearance its sums up liverpools defensive problems and it tells us fans to forget this season its all over we have to wait six month so this defence to improve and the new players gets used to brendans philosophy

    • Erin says:

Brendan philosophy ? Which is what? Attack and hope for the best. Without Suarez is showing as inadequate.

  • Chookz says:

Lucas and Borini are a waste and Sterling is overrated, his flaws are overlooked! BR needs to choose his strongest side and let them gel together. Stop playing a different team every week. Cummon he should know better! And lastly give Suso a chance!

  • vjm says:

I would say we never wanted Mario, instead we should have bought a striker who is willing to run behind defenders. Look at Mario when others have the ball at the edge of penalty area he was just standing., not making any run behind defenders pathetic. That’s where we miss Danny. Sakho what can I say about him. Every time we concede set piece that was the unnecessary free kick given by Sakho. We have paid 16 Mil for him ….. disgusting. In midfield where is creativity ? We have just lost the chance of signing gr8 players this year, because I don’t think we will qualify for CL next term. And last but not least SG is not a DM.
