Sturridge May be Fit for Basel Clash

Brendan Rodgers will be hoping to have Sturridge fit for the Champions League game in mid-week

Having missed the Merseyside derby, Daniel Sturridge may yet be fit for the Champions League clash away at Basel.

At first, Rodgers was dropping hints that the striker may be ready for the match at Anfield against Everton over the weekend but Sturridge missed out, not even being fit enough for the bench. However the manager has stated that he may be ready in time for the mid-week Champions League match. He said “I’ll see how he is [for Basel]. He wasn’t far away for Everton, but he certainly wasn’t fit enough to be on the bench.

“It helps to have that pace, especially when you are 1-0 up and the opposition has to come on to you. That pace through the middle can help then.”

Liverpool have struggled so far this season and while a number of people have begun to express the view that the team misses Luis Suarez, it is perhaps the absence of Sturridge, missing since the win over Spurs, that has hit Liverpool harder.

Rodgers said “But Daniel is obviously a top talent, whatever part of the game he comes into. And he’s not far away from being back playing.

“We want to score goals, but I believe that as the season goes on we will become better and better at that.”

With the game in Basel being the last before a double-header against Real Madrid, Liverpool will be keen to ensure a positive result is achieved and Sturridge could be key to an important victory.
