Sending out messages is an increasingly important aspect nowadays in Premier League football. With increasing revenue, shrewd tacticians and falling giants, the number of teams vying for those top four places has continued to grow.

The allure of the Champions League contributed immensely to the record spending that took place this summer, with over £800 million being splashed by Premier League clubs. Some experienced unprecedented net spends, such as Everton, while Manchester United saw their outlay top £150 million with the likes of Falcao and Angel Di Maria.

As for Liverpool, transfer deadline day was quiet, with only departures occurring at Anfield. There were loan deals for Oussama Assaidi and Sebastian Coates to Stoke City and Sunderland respectively, while the only rumour of an incoming was Victor Valdes on a free transfer. That was a deal never likely to transpire on deadline day, but a move may happen in December. Valdes is still recovering from a cruciate ligament injury that he sustained in March.

But back to the idea of messages. Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend was a significant message. Not only did the Reds comfortably dispose of a supposed top four rival on their own patch for the second year running, but Brendan Rodgers and his side demonstrated their resilience.

After being brushed aside themselves by Manchester City, the fixture at White Hart Lane took on added importance and Liverpool came through comfortably.

Nevertheless, the gap in quality between the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham is incredibly tight, with many managers stating that as many as six teams are in the hunt for the Premier League title this season. In all likelihood, only two will take the fight to the bitter end, as the teams with the best squads always enjoy the success.

Manchester City proved that last season.

They, along with a very ominous and strong Chelsea side, will be fighting for the crown this season.

At least five teams will be competing for just two places in the top four during this Premier League campaign and all have experienced varying starts to the season.

Of course the Reds will set their sights on the ultimate prize, but they will need to be wary of those racing right up behind them.

I think your comment in this article that Man Citeh “brushed aside” Liverpool in their recent match is a bit harsh. Until 2 mistakes, the reds were playing better and in control of the match on an away pitch. 2 Mistakes are hardly the grounds for stating “brushed aside” don’t you think, in hind sight?
